Friday, July 4th – This one’s going to be a little bit… odd. At the moment, I have laryngitis, and so days and days worth of sarcasm are bottling up inside because I cannot actually croak the jokes that are on my mind. I was thinking about Block Constructed and some of the problems I have seen play out, and a certain deck title of John F. Rizzo’s struck me as an apt description of where it was my mind was thinking.
Thursday, July 3rd – Block Constructed appears to be blighted with that most dangerous of Magical animal – the 800lb Elephant in the Room. This Elephant, as we know, is Blue, and Black, and has wings. Yes. The Faeries matchup is the first port of call for anyone looking to navigate the choppy seas of Block Constructed. Thursday, July 3rd – We are moving into Nationals season, and Grand Prix: Buenos Aires was last weekend. So was the Richie Proffitt Memorial Tournament. Standard is – will be, shortly – a widely played format online and at FNM (except around Madison, unfortunately), so people care about it. I do, too.

If you use this list, then your decks will no longer need to be any particular format at your casual table. It has the potential to create consistency in the casual world, as long as everyone uses one list. So, why should I be the arbiter of the list, as opposed to anyone else? Great question!

Wednesday, July 2nd – Given that all I’ve been doing since GP: Indy is helping Sam Black break formats and slaving away at language school, I’ve had no choice but to ruminate on the parallels between the two. Well, between learning a language and Magic generally, at least. I want to present, then, some of the similarities I’ve discovered, in the hopes of spelling out some global parallels for anyone trying to acclimate themselves to a way of thinking. Along the way, you just might become a wee little bit better at Magic.
Wednesday, July 2nd – You know, the Pro Tour tournaments are a great contribution to Magic’s identity. However, while it dominates much of the Magic dialogue, the Pro Tour is only a narrow sliver of the Magic Community; for the vast majority of Magic players, the game is all about friends and fun, playing Magic when life’s commitments allow you the time. This “silent majority” got to grab the spotlight a little bit this weekend, in a fantastic tribute to Richie Proffitt, PolarBearGod.
