The Kitchen Table #185 – Building Your First Five, TNG: Volume Three, Fleshing it Out

Read Abe Sargent every Thursday... at StarCityGames.com!
In last week’s article, I began the process of building a pair of 250 decks. In the first article we discussed how to start thinking about the deck you want to build. Last week we began building the deck by creating a skeleton. This week we are going to flesh out the skeleton.

Unlocking Legacy – Legacy Threshold, Part VI: Tarmogoyf, Oh My God!

In another installment of Dan’s development series of Legacy Threshold, Dan explores the inclusion of Tarmogoyf in the deck, supporting his analysis with many detailed practice games.

Chatter of the Squirrel — Maindeck Choices

Read Zac Hill every Thursday... at StarCityGames.com!
There are a lot of articles out there about the testing process, but I hope to cover somewhat different ground. I want to talk about how exactly you determine what cards to cut and add. A lot of people, it seems, do a lot of testing solely to figure out matchup percentages and determine what cards are good (or bad) at what point in time. When it comes to cutting or adding cards, though, I think most people aren’t nearly systematic enough.

Tact or Friction — Green in Prismatic

Read Talen Lee every Thursday... at StarCityGames.com!
I’ve been looking at Prismatic again lately, as right now, all the standard decks I want to play are brutally expensive or just lack room for all the stuff I want. I want to recycle Armageddons and race my Jotun Grunts with my Life From The Loams and my Cycling Lands and I need a win condition so we’ll splash Black for Teneb and now I need some more draw and… anyway. One thing that has happened is that I’ve read some more writers talking about Prismatic… and almost universally, they say something that summarizes as: You’ll need your Green slots for mana fixing. Seriously… where have these people been?

The Beautiful Struggle – What Can You Do?

Read Mark Young every Tuesday... at StarCityGames.com!
Let me tell you a little story. It is a story about how much I love playing Magic. It is a story about receiving good cards from good friends and good decks from good players. It is a story about how well-prepared I was for Regionals, and how right I was in last week’s article. It’s a story about matches in which Daybreak Coronet and Basal Sliver were played by my opponents…

From Right Field – Gumbo Week

Read Chris Romeo every Tuesday... at StarCityGames.com!
This week, Chris stirs up a delectable fishy stew from a myriad of ingredients. He talks about the lost art of sideboarding — and begs for help in this area — before moving to balmier climes and making fun of people chatting on Magic Online. He then compares Edge of Autumn to Rampant Growth, before finishing up with a little Bad Rare Blasphemy. Verily, this article has everything!

Magic Puzzles — Judge!

Read Jeff Till every Monday... at StarCityGames.com!
This week’s puzzle deals with players that are somewhat less impressive. They are so bad, in fact, that they cannot even manage the game state properly. Even “Bad Beat” Phil would be appalled. If you’re looking to win yourself an RGD draft set (or two for a perfect score), this is the week to start, as the fifth puzzle competition begins. All competitors are welcome, just send me your solutions each week via PM by Monday at midnight. Good luck, and enjoy!

He also shares Cedric Phillips’s winning build of Solar Flare, and brings us a huge dose of the usual Sanchez mayhem!

Insert Column Name Here – Staring At My Sandals? That’s A Paddlin’

Read The Ferrett every Monday... at StarCityGames.com!One of the things I can do is to look at my weak points — and one of them is mulligans. I’m better than many at mulliganing, but in Limited I still have issues of knowing when to mulligan, mainly because the decks and matchups are much more complicated than Constructed. Constructed decks are tightly-focused, but Limited decks can have several basic plans to victory. As such, I think it might be interesting if I took a couple of games and analyzed them from opening hand to finish… So, in fact, that’s precisely what I did.

Sealed Dissected – Future Seeing, Vol. 3: The Really Big Show

For those of us who aren’t heading to Regionals this weekend, there’s still a plethora of play to be had waiting in Magic Online’s Future Sight release tournaments. Eli gives us a quick study of a solid pool and how to approach it.

Magical Hack — Road to Regionals: The Road-Map to Regionals

Get ready for Magic the Gathering Regionals!
Regionals is always an interesting challenge, as the role of the savvy player or designer is to accurately estimate the upcoming metagame and position themselves either to dodge the brunt of the incoming attack or to pick at the weak flank that is left revealed with a surprise assault. This is the distilled essence of everything fellow Friday writer Mike Flores believes in, when it comes to picking a deck for a tournament, saving you several thousand words to bring the essential lesson: know your enemy, so that you may better defeat them.
