The votes are in, and we have our 2013 Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame class! This year, four deserving recipients have earned Magic’s most prestigious honor: a spot in the Hall of Fame. Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa (@PVDDR), Kenji Tsumura (@KenjiTsumura), Masashi Oiso (@mo_iso), and Patrick Chapin (@thepchapin) are this year’s inductees and will be welcomed into the Pro Tour Hall of Fame at Pro Tour Return to Ravnica (#PTRTR) this October.
Of course, one of the main public forums where people in the Magic community went to discuss the results of the Hall of Fame voting was Twitter. Among the storylines to come out of this year’s voting were Paulo’s lower than expected percentage (only 85%), Patrick Chapin making the Hall after many years of waiting, and the impact that cheating has on getting votes.
But most of all, the Twitter reaction surrounded one man: @HueyJensen. William ‘Huey’ Jensen fell one vote short of getting into the Hall of Fame. One measly vote! Twitter was mostly consolatory for Mr. Jensen. Here’s some of the reaction from Twitter regarding the #MTGHOF:

Congrats to
@thepchapin on#MTGHoF, but I think it’s very important to check the FOUR ppl who voted for Helmet Summerburger didn’t mean Huey— eric froehlich (@efropoker) July 27, 2012
Obviously completely overwhelmed with joy, actual greatest ever, but also so happy that
@hueyjensen will finally get justice in 2013.— Patrick Chapin (@thepchapin) July 27, 2012
Wow 39.86% for Jensen. Brutal.
— Brian Sondag (@BrianSondag) July 27, 2012
39.68% . . . are you kidding me!
— Osyp Lebedowicz (@OsypL) July 27, 2012
Seriously people what is going to take to get
@hueyjensen in 39.68% is just wrong!!!!— Robert Martin (@TheBeme) July 27, 2012
.
@mtgaaron If@calebdmtg (et al) can get a “Sponsor’s Exemption” for#PTAVR, can@hueyjensen get one for#MTGHOF? Serious question.— Elliot Scott (@Hackworth) July 27, 2012
Can’t we all just agree to round 39.68% to 40%? Such bad beats for Huey.
#MTGHOF— Bryce Menard (@BryceMenard) July 27, 2012
just panicked and double checked my sent folder to make sure
@hueyjensen had been on my#mtghof ballot. he was, and will be again next year— Ray Walkinshaw (@blisterguy) July 27, 2012
How did
@pvddr only get 70% of the player votes?— Chris Mascioli (@dieplstks) July 27, 2012
“Jon Finkel, Kai Budde, Gabriel Nassif, Babe Ruth, and Michael Jordan” -I assume every ballot that didn’t include

@mixedknuts I guess now we know what#WotC and Selection Committee members think of cheating…#mtghof twitpic.com/ac6aim— Elliot Scott (@Hackworth) July 27, 2012
lol, random votes for Mike Long/Mark Justice? Weird. Why did I read that? lol
— Nina Illingworth (@CardboardWitch) July 27, 2012
Sorry
@justin_gary didn’t make the hof, but good to see him getting support at 6. Next year!— Darwin Kastle (@DarwinKastle) July 27, 2012
HOF is pretty regimented now. 5 PT T8 is a near lock; 4 PT T8s and you’re in discussion. This is good. I wish it had always been this tough.

One of the other big news stories of the week is the SolForge Kickstarter project. SolForge (@SolForgeGame) is a digital trading card game produced by Gary Games, the makers of Ascension. On August 1, Justin Gary (@Justin_Gary), Brian Kibler (@bmkibler), and the rest of the Gary Games crew released a very funny introductory video to go along with their Kickstarter project.
Among the details released as part of the project to fund SolForge is a series of prizes that will be awarded to those that donate, from a $5 donation (which gets you into the Beta) up to a $10,000 donation, which will earn that generous donator a spot in the SolForge storyline as a major character. But perhaps most exciting is the involvement of Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering, as part of the team.
And so far, it’s been very successful. As I write this article, it’s already made over $33,000, and that’s in less than a day! People are very excited about this game’s prospects, and some of that enthusiasm has been shared with the world on Twitter. Here are some of the best snippets about #SolForge so far:

So Richard Garfield and
@bmkibler have a kickstarter? I don’t care what it’s for, I have supported it.#fb— Gareth Lewin (@GarethLewin) August 1, 2012
Solforge video was great! Donated, I have.

Ahh, Gary Games is going to take more of my money after I buy all the Ascension boxes at GenCon…

@bmkibler Okay, I actually am very excited. Backed for $100.— Josh Utter-Leyton (@wrapter) August 1, 2012
considering donating to the solforge kickstarter even though i’m a cranky old man re: kickstarter

This whole
#solforge project (among other things) will likely lead me to purchase an iPad…— Lauren Lee (@mulldrifting) August 1, 2012
Thinking about starting a Kickstarter to help me be the largest contributor to the Solforge Kickstarter.

Instead of donating directly to

Yo dawg I hear you like kickstarter so we started a kickstarter for your kickstarter.
— christine sprankle (@cspranklerun) August 1, 2012
I’m curious what would happen if a corp. or consortium were the highest donor to
#solforge. A Pepsi Ascension card? A Brony Ascension card?— Steve Guillerm (@steveexplosion) August 1, 2012
I’m not sure what the point of Solforge is. Sure it is cool that it is mobile, but don’t we have enough gaming between MTG and Ascension?
— Jonathan Richmond (@norbert88) August 1, 2012
Biggest plus & minus for me of
@solforgegame is being digital only: not tied to length/timing of IRL OP, But IRL is primary driver of my mtg— Dan Barrett (@dangerawesome) August 1, 2012
And as I said, my interest levels may change once we can actually see what the gameplay is like.
— Alex Spalding (@luminumcan) August 1, 2012
Based on the success of Justin Gary and Brian Kibler in Magic, the inclusion of Richard Garfield in the making and development of SolForge, and the success of Ascension in the Magic community, it’s certainly not a stretch to believe that SolForge will be partially based on how popular it is among Magic players. If that’s the case, then based on the initial Twitter response SolForge looks like it’s headed in the right direction.
