Tribal Thriftiness #9 – An Army of One (Tribe)

This week, Dave takes a look at a number of things that are small and military in nature. No, not Army brats – the Kithkin Soldiers.

Good Thursday to you all. This is the column dedicated to sending you a postcard from the realm of the casual each week. For the past two weeks, I’ve taken a more holistic casual eye to the cards of Morningtide. This article is the final part of that review.

At present, Vintage is a format of change. While it’s long been a format of broken combos and control strategies, it seems that the attack phase is becoming a lot more important. Today’s So Many Insane Plays sees Vintage World Champion Stephen Menendian bring us his current take on the aggressive archetype, with full reasoning and card breakdown each step of the way!

The first Standard results with Morningtide are officially in! We have the Top 8 decks from the recent StarCityGames.com Standard open available here, and today’s Peebles Primers takes a look as some of the funkier offerings from a 72-player Grand Prix Trial held in Japan. In a Top 8 packed with famous names, it appears the Japanese have brought some interesting decks to the table…

Tiago Chan, Portugal’s Magic dynamo, takes us by the hand and leads us through the choppy waters of a triple-Lorwyn draft on Magic Online. He shares each and every pick, from one to forty-five, and supplies expert commentary on the draft and the games. For more detailed information, visit the forums!

Wizards has announced the 2008 premier events schedule. On the plus side, Pro Tour Berlin, which I have been looking forward to for almost a year, has been announced. On the down side, Wizards has cut back to just three Pro Tours. Sure – Magic is dying: the fact that Grand Prix now routinely have over 1.5k players per event proves it. Or maybe Wizards is putting their effort into the areas with the biggest return and most player support. Which is it? Let’s look at some numbers…

One of the new cards from Morningtide I’ve been trying to wrap my brain around is Cream of the Crop. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about it because it’s Green, it seems really good, and it’s not a creature. That’s relatively rare in Green.

Morningtide is here, and the new cards are kicking up a stink in Constructed formats across the world. While everyone tries to shoehorn the latest chase rares into their Standard decks, there’s a little uncommon Artifact that can perhaps resurrect a long forgotten archetype. The card? Obsidian Battle-Axe. The archetype? Fires…

With one pack of Morningtide replacing the third pack of Lorwyn, all of the tribal archetypes take a hit. Some tribes get a boost, while some get a kick in the teeth. Today’s Limited Lessons sees Nick Eisel break down both the Faerie and Merfolk tribes, looking for that elusive edge in LLM draft.

Earwig Squad is my home boy. My bro. He and I play GameCube on a regular basis after he sprays me with like a can and a half of Axe. I think this is the most underrated card in the set. He’s got Negator stats, basically, and can come down as early as the second turn in most Goblin builds. Once that happens you get a ton of information and automatic strategic superiority, or at least the opportunity to dictate how the game is played on your terms.

With only ten days to go until the unveiling of the first Pro Tour of a new season, it’s time to dust off the archives, trawl through the stats, and then make outrageously unfounded statements about the likely winners and losers. At least, that’s how Rich Hagon does it. Travel around the globe from Austria to Japan, via Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Britain, Germany, Greece, and Israel. Don’t forget your frequent flyer cards!
I missed out on the Morningtide Prerelease because, well, I had to go to a convention. At this convention, I got to talk to many beautiful women, many of whom gave me backrubs. So I refuse to feel bad about it. That said, I did get down to the release party this… And while I’m a little late to the party, here’s my initial take on Morningtide!

Having successfully decimated Extended once before, the mighty JFR is on the prowl for a second superstar creation. Today, he talks us through the genesis of his Big Mana Rock deck, in his usual inimitable style. Strap yourself in, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride…
