Friday, January 23rd – I appreciated LA weather – or at least not being in the Madison weather – a bit more than usual. Thursday night in LA, we were eating outside in shirtsleeves, while Madison was somewhere around -20 degrees. In LA, I was walking on green grass. Well, in Madison, I could do that, too. Very faded grass – and only if I first scrapped off a couple feet of snow – but we have green grass down there somewhere.
Friday, January 23rd – With the rise of Faerie Wizards in the metagame, regardless of whose list you’re rocking it with (American or Japanese) it’s easy to note that it has been shaping the metagame around it. Faeries takes a bite out of Elves, stifling that deck choice near to irrelevance at the PTQs we’ve seen so far, and has a reasonable matchup against Zoo as well, so new innovations were necessary to escape the tricksy Wizard tribe and their previously-irrelevant lair at the Riptide Laboratory.

Thursday, January 22nd – This week has been a rollercoaster ride. First, we swore in a new president. The next day, the company I work for let go a small but significant number of employees; friends and colleagues who are now out looking for work in these terrible economic times. It makes me thankful for all the blessings life’s given me… including the escapism and joy that Magic brings. So let’s get on with it, eh?
Thursday, January 22nd – I’m back from the Grand Prix and I had a pretty fun time, even though the actual Magic part of the main event was miserable. I had decided on G/B Loam Dredge, in which I had some input, but it was originally designed by Matt Nass. The deck was stone-cold terrible, but Death Cloud, Faeries, and non-TEPS combo are infinitely in your favor, which is about half of the popular decks I expected at the GP.

Wednesday, January 21st – Recently, some friends of mine got together at one of my friend’s place for a small bash in honor of my birthday. As part of the festivities, several of us shuffled up our Magic decks and began playing. Prior to this event, I discussed what kind of Magic I wanted to play, so I combined some formats to create what I call Abe’s Birthday Bash. It was a ton of fun for all. Let me go over the format of craziness and awesomeness, and you can take anything from it that you desire.
Wednesday, January 21st – With Grand Prix: Chicago coming up in March, Legacy players will have a huge tournament to prepare for, full of its own challenges and requirements that are distinct from the smaller events that we are used to. Instead of tuning a deck to last five rounds and hopefully a playoff in the Top 8, GP players will have 15+ rounds to do battle in. Monday, January 19th – Battlestar Galactica kicked off its final half season yesterday. Unfortunately, I missed it because I was in Los Angeles as the Magic Pro Tour kicked off its hopefully not-final season with an Extended Grand Prix. But before BSG started its historic final run, the Sci-Fi channel ran a half-hour special with the top ten things to get new viewers caught up on the show. Let’s see if we can do the same with Magic…
