Simple in concept, simple in execution, and hopefully educating and entertaining along the way.

Constructed Criticism – Figuring Out Fauna Shaman

The StarCityGames.com Open Series heads to Denver!
Wednesday, August 11th – Fauna Shaman will define Standard for the next year. Take my word for it; the guy is insane. My initial impressions of him led me to believe that he was mediocre, since he has to untap to get any value, but with such a powerful ability lies a hidden value that is much harder to decipher: giving your deck the ability to produce threat after threat that the opponent must immediately handle.

The StarCityGames.com Open Series heads to Denver!
Tuesday, August 10th – In this week’s edition of Duel With Ruel, Hall of Famer Antoine Ruel takes the role of Guillaume Wafo-Tapa, recreating the French Nationals semifinal non-event with his brother Oli taking the role of Guillaume Matignon. Blue/White versus Pyromancer’s Ascension. Control versus Combo. Both decks will likely feature at U.S. Nationals and the StarCityGames.com Standard Open in Denver… Who will be victorious?

Thirst for Knowledge – The Rest of Standard

The StarCityGames.com Open Series heads to Denver!
Tuesday, August 10th – If you wanted my opinion on the best deck to be playing for the remainder of this Standard format, I’d happily direct you to my article from last week for the answer. The bottom line is that Destructive Force is just absurd, but I’d accept “Primeval Titan decks” as a viable answer to the “best deck in Standard” question as well.

The Long and Winding Road – My GenCon 2010

The StarCityGames.com Open Series heads to Denver!
Tuesday, August 10th – GenCon is always a hard weekend to evaluate. It isn’t just a tournament, like a Grand Prix or a PTQ. Admittedly, most tournaments are about the experience and the tournament both, for all but the most hardcore of pros. In that regard, GenCon offers an experience that’s rather difficult to match.

Now that the baseline decks are in line and constantly being reshaped week to week by various National Championships, with less than two weeks left before the opening of U.S. Nationals I have turned my sights toward trying out new ideas.
