Thursday, January 14th – I love all colors in EDH, although clearly not equally, since last week’s list was mostly Jund. Jund strategies, which involve mostly savage aggression, are definitely my style, but more subtle and tricksy strategies aren’t lost on me. My original Generals, however, were WUG: first Arcades Sabboth and then Phelddagrif.
Thursday, January 14th – Magic is a game of high level decision-making and resource managements, but it is also, at its core, a game defined by making the best decision in the time possible. Whether choosing which creatures to send into combat by pushing them into the red zone of a feature match table or sliding creatures across the uneven concrete in the schoolyard, there is only so much time you can take to make a play.
Thursday, January 14th – I want to look at the top decks from the recent StarCityGames Open Weekends. More specifically, I want to see just how much more diverse the Legacy field is from the Standard field. I also want to see just how dominant Jund can be. Finally, I’ll add something about Extended. It is the current PTQ format, after all.
Thursday, January 14th – I’m sure by now everyone heard about the tumultuous Top 8 playoffs this past weekend in Dallas/Fort Worth at the StarCityGames.com Legacy Open. Not only was I there, but I was Head Judging the event. Ultimately this means that I had to assign both Game Losses that players received during those rounds. A lot of people are talking about those situations, and there is a lot of misinformation and vitriol, both to the players and toward the judges at the event. That’s why I asked SCG for the opportunity to set the record straight.

Wednesday, January 13th – Choosing the correct deck for testing purposes can be almost as important as choosing the correct deck for an approaching tournament. Perceived wisdom says that the Best Deck in the format is usually the correct choice… but when do you choose to test the deck that beats such a deck?
In the Dallas/Fort Worth StarCityGames.com Legacy Open, we were once again presented with a fairly open field in Legacy, although Fish seemed to be the deck to expect to see a couple of times over the course of the tournament. More than a third of the Fish decks (5 of 14) in the field made the top 16 so if you hope to be at the top tables, you will want to be packing some answers to the pesky little guys.
