Monday, February 1st – Last week I talked about the new “best” deck in Extended, but time has consistently taught us that something is only the “best” until people want to beat it badly enough. Dredge used to be the big man on campus, back in the day where Breakthrough and Ichorid were legal, but Wizards decided to print plenty of cards that gave the deck hell, and most of which are still around today.

Monday, February 1st -Thada Adel, Acquisitor is interesting because of its versatility. If you connect early against Workshops, you could steal a Crucible of Worlds to combat Smokestack. Against Oath of Druids and Tezzeret, you can attack Time Vault / Voltaic Key (and even assemble it on your side with just two hits); against The Deck and Tezzeret, you can also remove Tinker targets from the game to cut off that avenue of attack.
Monday, February 1st – I feel watching at a pre-release is often a better way to construct card evaluations than playing in it. After watching people play all day, playing in a flight myself, and talking with people about how the cards they played with performed, I have formulated my take on the common and uncommon rankings for each color.
Friday, January 29th – Prereleases tend to hit a sweet spot in terms of the best atmosphere for a tournament: casual players come to crack open new packs and play around with cards they’ve never played with before, experienced players come to trade or draft (in hopes of accumulating packs for later, private drafts), and we judges get to work our way through the wrenches thrown into our rules knowledge by new mechanics and peculiar interactions.
