Friday, August 22nd – To break from the monotony of over-analyzing Lorwyn Block Constructed, I decided I might have a little fun doing small-set draft on Magic Online. Having opened a decent number of packs of Eventide now on MTGO, I feel confident in saying that Runed Halo is in fact from Shadowmoor, no matter how many times I say it’s from Eventide.

Thursday, August 21st – The Wizards forums have an interesting thread, titled “What Would it Take to Get You to Play Constructed Tournaments.” The topic is a good one, because Constructed play is hurting online. The Sealed PEs fire, as do most of the Standard and Block Constructed events. Other events – Extended, Classic, Momir Vig, etc. – don’t reach 24 players, so they do not happen. This is bad, and something has to be done.
Wednesday, August 20th – When was the last time you could have a gross amount of fun playing a tournament-quality deck that relies on a sorcery that costs a brazillion mana, but leaves you with more creatures and your opponent with little to no chance of recovering? Okay, which of you smart-alecks said “with Tooth and Nail in Mirrodin block?” Dave never got into Tooth and Nail, but he is enjoying Warp World – and you can too!
Wednesday, August 20th – Last week I mentioned the “deck tech” from GP: Denver featuring Conley Woods’ Kelpie deck. I found it really exciting since I’d been kicking around the idea that River Kelpie hadn’t been getting the respect it deserved as a card advantage engine, not only just for Persist cards and Makeshift Mannequin, but the also the new Retrace mechanic.
Wednesday, August 20th – In my younger years, I was a huge fan of Olivier Ruel. He was charismatic, funny, traveled the whole world, and told great stories. He was also a very strong Magic player. Oli is one of the best candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot this year. But, in my opinion, Olivier shouldn’t be there. Because he’s a cheater.
Tuesday, August 19th – After seventeen Rounds across three days, the Great Britain team for Words is locked and loaded. Join Rich as he takes you inside the Top 8, and brings you a plethora of thoughts that took exactly 2 hours, 26 minutes and 44 seconds to compose, curiously the exact time taken to win the Olympic Women’s marathon. Coincidence? Hardly.
Tuesday, August 19th – I’m a little shell-shocked over the decision to cancel the Invitational. We all know the U.S. economy is in the toilet, and responsible companies need to look for measures to cut costs and keep afloat. Is Wizards of the Coast one of those companies? I’m not an economist, but I play one on TV, and the report is that Hasbro, the parent corporation of Wizards of the Coast, had a very good 2007…
Tuesday, August 19th – I played at a PTQ this week, and did pretty poor because I didn’t cave in to the gnawing sensation in the back of my head urging me to audible to Kithkin 45 minutes before the tournament started. Instead, I decided to play Doran, and lost to Mono-Green Elves and MRA.
Monday, August 18th – Doug examines the first results from the GenCon Legacy championships and discusses the importance of getting in practice over having the objectively best deck. With aggro-control again taking the world championships, we take a look at other aggressive-disruptive strategies and then finish up with one of the craziest decklists in a long line of weirdness. Not to be missed!
Monday, August 18th – I am, to my estimation, a good resource for the ins and outs of the Kithkin deck strategy ,and specifically for the latest iteration, Kith Long. I am a big fan of the Kith folk and a big proponent of its continued success, so when a big bad new deck comes along threatening to knock Kithkin off the map I am quick to try to help the poor little guys have a chance.
Friday, August 15th – I spent last weekend judging feature matches at Grand Prix: Denver. That actually involves a lot less game watching than you might think, but I did see a lot of Magic played. What really impressed me was the potency of the manabases. Sure, Owen Turtenwald’s Mono-Red deck, and the Mono-White aggro decks were consistent and solid, but so was the five color deck that won the whole thing.
