Friday, January 2nd – Last week, we had a look at a new spin on an old favorite, looking to update the Rock for modern Extended. While everyone is looking at Faeries or Zoo or Elves as their deck of choice, I was curious to see how Extended looked from the perspective of the fair-to-a-fault Black/Green deck.

Thursday, January 1st – Recently I regained my Abedraft box from one of my friends, who had it in his possession for over a year while my life status was in limbo. After regaining it, I began the task of checking all of the cards to see if they were still there. While doing these checklists, I came across a variety of things and uncovered some interesting cards, questions, and more. In today’s article, I want to talk about them, perhaps build a deck or two, and otherwise have some fun.

Thursday, January 1st – Green needs some help in terms of engaging in Magic outside of just summoning great creatures and hoping that they’re enough to get there. This is not to say that I think Green is the worst color in terms of power, because I don’t – there are plenty of great, tournament-caliber Green cards being made in every Magic set.

Wednesday, December 31st – Two weekends, two second-place PTQ finishes. “Kowalifying.†Certainly not satisfying. At least the guy I lost to this time around was Cynic Kim, i.e. An Actual Player, but still. Stings, daggers, grail-shaped beacons in the sky hovering exactly one micron beyond arm’s length, all glowing and neon and come-hither. An almost profound and certainly reinvigorated respect for how difficult this hill is to conquer.
Tuesday, December 30th – Somebody went and decided that, rather than rely on thirty-dollar enchantments to win in Extended, they’d use a bunch of common and uncommon one-power guys. Can Extended combo decks be the cheap way to go in the new PTQ season?
Tuesday, December 30th – In the current Extended, the metagame has seemingly switched only twice, once from Berlin and again after seeing the Worlds decks and the introduction of Mono Blue Control into the mix. However, the supposed metagame for Grand Prix: Los Angeles seems to be shaping up into three camps: MUC, Zoo, and everything else.

Monday, December 29th – I don’t remember exactly when I decided to Judge at Worlds in Memphis. Given the pace I’ve been on this year, it might seem like a no-brainer to attend a domestic Pro Tour. (Is Worlds a Pro Tour or not? I’ve heard it go both ways.) But with Kyoto being the first Pro Tour of 2009 and me with some relatives that needed visiting in Japan, vacation days were looking tight.

Friday, December 26th – With Worlds behind us, and an official confirmation that there are no bannings to the format that will be appearing before the start of the PTQ season, we now know everything there is to see about the format and can start working with the underpinnings of Extended in order to work out decks for the PTQ season.
