At the Gathering – Worldwake the Dead

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Wednesday, February 3rd – Last Tuesday was a day of Extended testing, and we discovered a few things. First, All-In-Red is a lot of fun to play, but way too swingy to want to use in a real tournament. If my goal were to make Day 2, it’s a viable contender, as the power and a little luck could allow you to go 4-2, assuming you can scrounge up 3 byes.

MTGCast #192 – Summit Apes Go BAM-BAM!

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Wednesday, February 3rd – On this week’s edition of MTGCast, the guys discuss the Worldwake prerelease, hot new Worldwake cards, Stephen Menendian’s superlative Legacy article, and more!

Legacy’s Allure – Building Gifts for a Merfolk/Zoo Metagame

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Tuesday, February 2nd – Inspired by the consistent success of both Merfolk and Zoo in Legacy, Doug presents a deck that attempts to tackle both of those decks by treating them as poles of the metagame. Using the powerful Gifts Ungiven and a relatively new win condition, his deck attempts to wallop the common aggro decks while maintaining flexibility in the face of the diversity of the format. Find out how to build a deck that mixes board control with combo kills in this week’s Legacy’s Allure!

Removed From Game – From Prerelease to PTQ to Pro Tour, Part 1

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Tuesday, February 2nd – Join Rich Hagon for the Prerelease Money Can’t Buy, as he travels to Wizards HQ in Seattle for Worldwake gaming action.

Embracing The Chaos – Reins of Thraximundar

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Tuesday, February 2nd – On the Thursday before the prerelease, week 2 of the Armada Games EDH League came up faster than I could prepare for, so I had to shelve my plans to run Lord of Tresserhorn out there (I hope I have time to put him together, completely with Worldwake cards). Keeping with the Grixis theme, I decided to run Thraximundar, who I also hadn’t updated in a while…

Flow of Ideas – Worldwake Draft Pick Orders

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Monday, February 1st – I feel watching at a pre-release is often a better way to construct card evaluations than playing in it. After watching people play all day, playing in a flight myself, and talking with people about how the cards they played with performed, I have formulated my take on the common and uncommon rankings for each color.

The Long & Winding Road – Fishing in NY

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Monday, February 1st -Thada Adel, Acquisitor is interesting because of its versatility. If you connect early against Workshops, you could steal a Crucible of Worlds to combat Smokestack. Against Oath of Druids and Tezzeret, you can attack Time Vault / Voltaic Key (and even assemble it on your side with just two hits); against The Deck and Tezzeret, you can also remove Tinker targets from the game to cut off that avenue of attack.

Insert Column Name Here – Thoughts From The Worldwake Prerelease

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Monday, February 1st – The Ferrett rocked out to his local prerelease, ready to sling a selection of the sweet Worldwake spells. He shares his first impressions on a number of Worldwake cards, be they strong or weak…

Constructed Criticism – The New Blue Zoo

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Monday, February 1st – Last week I talked about the new “best” deck in Extended, but time has consistently taught us that something is only the “best” until people want to beat it badly enough. Dredge used to be the big man on campus, back in the day where Breakthrough and Ichorid were legal, but Wizards decided to print plenty of cards that gave the deck hell, and most of which are still around today.

You Lika The Juice? – The State of Green, Worldwake Edition

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Friday, January 29th – Once upon a time, Jamie Wakefield was the most visible and vocal advocate for Green in Magic, but I was always shouting right along behind him. Now that he’s moved on from Magic, I often feel a responsibility to provide feedback to the guys who make the cards on how well they’re standing by the color Green from the perspective of the fans who play the cards.

The Magic Show #174 – The Worldwake We Live In

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Friday, January 29th – Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of the Magic Show. This week we’re going to go over Worldwake – the Spoiler has filled up, the Prerelease is mere hours away, and it’s time to see just what cards and strategies are going to come hurling at us this Spring. Let’s go!

The Justice League – New Year, New Prerelease

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Friday, January 29th – Prereleases tend to hit a sweet spot in terms of the best atmosphere for a tournament: casual players come to crack open new packs and play around with cards they’ve never played with before, experienced players come to trade or draft (in hopes of accumulating packs for later, private drafts), and we judges get to work our way through the wrenches thrown into our rules knowledge by new mechanics and peculiar interactions.

The Kitchen Table #322 – A Professional Look at the DCI

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Thursday, January 28th – The topic of today’s piece is judging, which goes far outside my normal article remit. want to do is discuss the role of the DCI in regards to sanctioning players, what the legal ramifications are to such things, and the role of an adjudicator in these sorts of proceedings.

Flow of Ideas – How Does Worldwake Change Zendikar Limited?

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Thursday, January 28th – While I try and avoid doing a card by card review when possible for that particular reason, I think looking at the impact of how a set will change the dynamic of a Limited format before the pre-release and subsequent night of drafting can be an interesting and informative exercise…

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #311 – Prepping for the Worldwake Prerelease

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Thursday, January 28th – When you read this, the prerelease will be – at most – a couple of days away. The spoilers are out. It is time to start thinking about what Worldwake will do to the Limited metagame. We will be playing sealed with half Worldwake, and drafting with less Zendikar, and a pack or two of the new set. That will change things.
