From Right Field: Easy Like Christmas Morning

I’ve got a new favorite cheap, cheap, cheap pet deck, one that I don’t mind letting my friend Matt play. It’s dirt cheap, which is perfect because I don’t always know where his hands have been or when he washed them last. I alluded to the deck in my last piece. It’s sometimes called the new Goblins deck, but you’ll start calling it the Empty the Warrens deck soon enough…

The Beautiful Struggle: On Discipline

Mark does something out-of-character in this article… he admits that Flores was right. Sure, it takes a lot out of him, but the words come out eventually. This excellent article tackles the concept of discipline in Magic, and covers a number of helpful tips that can improve our games, whatever the level of our current play. If you’re serious about improvement, then this article is unmissable.

Battle Royale Round 14 – Channeling Doc

StarCityGames.com - Battle Royale!

Last week, Kyle put paid to Eli with a fast and furious Sliver deck. This week, it’s time for something completely different. Aggro has been done. Control is old hat. But Combo? That’s the ticket!

Worlds Standard – My Performance

Last week, Josh took a look at the Standard metagame both before and after Worlds 2006. Today, he expands on this theme and shares his own personal performance. Over six gruelling rounds, his Flores-designed deck took him to a 3-3 performance. What went wrong? What went right? Read on to find out…

Battle Royale Round 13 – Down To The Wire

StarCityGames.com - Battle Royale!
What’s this? A Pro Tour regular submitting a super tight aggro deck with a curve that uses a sexist metaphor? I wasn’t expecting that. I was expecting something a little more controllish. A mirror, perhaps.

Before the matchup, I did some testing, and it went all the way for Sanchez. The games reminded me of Hobbes’s definition of human existence in his seminal work of political philosophy, Leviathan. That is, brief, nasty, and short.

Battle Royale Round 13 – Slivering To Victory

StarCityGames.com - Battle Royale!
Friday, 1st of December, 2006

The dark sky flashed and the clouds became illuminated as bolts of lightning struck down across my precious city. I had a date with Eli, and I couldn’t disappoint. I’d had power problems the entire day, but the battle must go on…

Top 10 – The Best Standard Cards Before And After Worlds 2006

Mike often makes bold claims regarding the relative strength of cards. According to him, Skred was once the most powerful card in Standard. Worlds has come and gone, and many folk gambled on the metagame and packed their decks with backbreakers… but what were, and what are, the Top 10 cards in the format? Mike reveals all…

A Look at Standard – Worlds

As we all know, Dragonstorm took the top spot at Worlds this year. Of course, the top deck – or even a list of the Top 8 decks – doesn’t tell the whole story. There are many rounds of Magic at Worlds, and a fair few decks that posted 5-1 or better. Today, Josh looks at some of the more interesting ways to battle Dragonstorm, and shares his thoughts on the ideal build for Boros in Standard.

Lessons from Worlds, Part One: Don’t be Cocky

Craig “The Professor” Jones’s preparation for Worlds was not as exhaustive as one might expect. With mere hours to go before the start of play, he audibled from his pet Reb/Back Pact Husk deck into what is inarguably the most powerful deck in the format – Dragonstorm. His Day 1 performance, while hardly blistering, smoldered along merrily. He learnt a few important magical lessons on his way to a 4-2 record, lessons he shares with us today. Fancy playing Dragonstorm in the current Standard? Prof has the tricks for you!
