Thursday, July 24th – I ran a PTQ last weekend. The Top 8 happened – Faeries and Faeries and Merfolk and Faeries and some Elementals and – who cares? That format is dead already. It was pre-Eventide, so everything will change. I’ll talk a bit about it, then I’ll look at some Eventide cards. That’s more interesting.
Thursday, July 24th – Eventide’s nearing the shelves, so it’s time to look through the cards and find those “necessities” that the budget player should be focusing on finding.
Thursday, July 24th – Welcome to the Thursday column dedicated to bringing you topics pertinent to the largest chunk of Magic players out there, the casual world. This is your pilot, cruising with you to a nice altitude in search of new worlds for the column to explore. Today I want to write about a topic that weighs heavy on the hearts of casual players everywhere. I want to talk about land destruction.
Wednesday, July 23rd – Quillspike: a card that screams to be abused. Eventide, it seems, is throwing a few spanners into the cogged metagame machinery, and this unassuming 1/1 for three mana has the potential to be a big player. So, how best do we utilize this funky three-drop? Benjamin Peebles-Mundy investigates…
Wednesday, July 23rd – In his debut article for StarCityGames, Level 4 pro David Irvine brings us not one, not two, but three interesting Standard decks for the Eventide metagame. He also showcases what he believes to be the cream of the current format, and provides concise and exacting sideboarding plans for the major players in the field.
Wednesday, July 23rd – While I rarely do “set reviews†in the strictest sense, taking each card line-by-line and spouting such wisdom as “It’s cool that Mogg Fanatic and Incinerate were reprinted; those cards might find a home in aggressive Red decks,†every once in awhile a set is released that contains a higher than average density of cards with atypical applications. It seems to me like Eventide has many of this type of card.
Wednesday, July 23rd – When last we left our hero, he’d dug into the White and Blue cards of interest in Eventide. Let’s move on and try to finish things up…
Tuesday, July 22nd – In June, Wizards of the Coast announced some major changes for the rarity breakdown for upcoming sets – instead of the Rares, Uncommons, and Commons we were used to, they added a new rarity level known as Mythic Rares. How do these new types of rares affect the value of your cards? In this week’s edition of Insider Trading, Ben tackles the issue of Mythic Rares and gets down to the nitty gritty of the situation!
Tuesday, July 22nd – With 180 fresh new cards entering the Limited cardpool this coming weekend, Nick Eisel is here to help! Eventide is nearly upon us, and the existing Draft archetypes in triple-Shadowmoor need updating with new tech. Let Nick lead the way…
Tuesday, July 22nd – Two weeks ago, several articles caused a fair amount of forum chatter with their accounts of rules lawyering. Unfortunately, due to the two-day Prerelease, I had most of my article for last week prepped when these articles came out, and I didn’t have time to whip out this response. Hopefully you all remember these cases…
Tuesday, July 22nd – For those who love Rules that aren’t, and for those who love stories of old that are, it’s time to dial back the years to the Fall of 1997 and take a walk on the Miserable side of life through Tempest, Stronghold, Exodus and the Saga of Urza. And his Legacy and Destiny and Ford Cortina, an automotive gag that only Brits will understand. And possibly not even them.
Monday, July 21st – Nationals season approaches for most of us, and all non-Aussie eyes are now on Standard. With Eventide in the mix, promising to punch the metagame in the face, it serves us well to look at some of the currently popular strategies in preparation for the Big Show. Today, Patrick recaps all we know about the powerful Elves strategy, and thrusts it into the new Eventide metagame…
Monday, July 21st – In today’s So Many Insane Plays, Stephen takes one final snapshot of the metagame at the time of the so-called Vintage Apocalypse. In this article, Stephen shows how Shadowmoor changed the Vintage metagame just before the DCI pushed the metaphorical button…
Monday, July 21st – Usually when an author does a set review or two they go card by card through an entire color, or maybe through the whole set, but I wanted to take a different approach. Rather than try and evaluate cards in the abstract I wanted to separate some of the wheat from the chaff evaluate in context and see what cards have value to current existing archetypes…
Monday, July 21st – Doug gives us a short and sweet Eventide evaluation, considering some new building-block cards that will have a strong impact on the Legacy format. Will the enemy-colored Cairn cycle fill in for our missing enemy-color fetchlands, bringing Rock decks to the forefront? Will Wake Thrasher make those mighty Merfolk playable? All this, plus a breakdown of last month’s major Legacy events serve to prepare you for the country’s biggest Legacy events in August.
