Double Or Nothing: What Do We Lose?

Every time a new set shows up, we get a slew of”the new Standard” articles, telling us how a whole host of new decks based around unlikely card combos will be wrecking Standard in a months time. If a deck has been eating up tournaments for a year, and it’s left intact by a rotation, why should it stop winning? Jim looks at the current top decks to see who comes out unscathed.

Goblins: Peeking Into The New Type 2

Now, my first impulse when looking over the Onslaught spoiler and casually observing the available Goblins was,”Nice try, Wizards, but…” But Steven’s deck made me take another look. I may not be King of Beatdown, but it seems to me that a red goblin deck can really dish out some major damage.

The Mana Curve Of Future Standard Colours

The first thing to mention about upcoming Standard is that, unless things changed dramatically, we’re going to be looking at a lot of U/G for at least the first month or two, unless I’m really missing something. The second thing to mention is that the resulting Tier One control deck will either remain U/B Tog, or be Upheaval based, or be U/W based.

Double or Nothing: Setting The Standard

After what seems like months and months of playing OBC, I finally escaped but with only a week before the Bath Monthly Standard tourney – and not a moment too soon, as Jim learns some valuable lessons about Shvartsman Study!

Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?: Deck Ideas For Type Two

If there is one syndrome the Magic community is notorious for, it’s forgetting about good cards in the environment. Judgment has come and the result? The entire Invasion block should be renamed the Vacation Block. What cards are still good?

What IS Psychatog?

Why is Psychatog so damned strong? Daniel looks at ‘Tog from the classic rock/paper/scissors perspective and tries to place it properly.

Double Or Nothing: I Need Wrath Of God!

Okay, you got us: Technically, this is a tourney report. But realistically, Jim does such a fine job deconstructing why his UZI ‘Tog deck fails in OBC that we felt we just had to put it here. What separates the winning ‘Tog decks from the losing builds?

Wonderboy: An Attempt To Link Tenacious D To OBC

By now, you’re maybe thinking,”How can a three-color deck make Wonder work?” Or maybe you’re thinking,”Hey, that blisterguy is a mad, hotty MC hottison.” And you’d be right. But maybe you’re thinking,”Mmmm. Oprah, whipped cream, and two flavors of catfood. Me like!”, in which case you need help. Soon.

My Wife The Unicorn

I learned a very important lesson at GenCon – not necessarily about OBC, but about Magic in general. But to get to the lesson, you’ll have to stay with me through a discussion of the World’s Weirdest Top 8, a Big Decision made before the tourney, and the usual fluff that I put in my so-called articles.

The Daily Shot: Work With Me

I don’t gravitate towards games that are”like work.” You can play Magic: The Gathering as a lark and not have a care in the world. It isn’t the games – it’s me. I make my games like work. Do you?

The Daily Shot: CARDS

Bad cards, bad cards, whatcha’ gonna’ do? Whatcha gonna do, when they come for you?

The Daily Shot Patrol arrests the worst 3-cc cards of all time!

A Gathering Of Magic

Usually, I have Friday night services at my temple that start at exactly the same time as the Friday Night Magic tournament. Last Friday, however, services ended a whopping hour before they usually begin , so I got to head over to StarCity Games for some much-needed Magic playing.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #41: Cephalid Constable

Here’s another card I figure could be broken… But what colors work best with it, and what prevents the much-hyped Constable lock from being a Tier 2 Standard deck?

The Daily Shot: Let’s Talk About Magic, You And I

A gaming everyman’s desire to kick some ass and sleep ’till noon is eternally youthful – if anything, it grows stronger with age. I believe that if I ever become more successful at Magic, you won’t be able to shake the rest of the kids stuff out of me.

Double or Nothing: Back in the Saddle

Jim’s back after his annual post-Nationals break from Magic – and he’s got a new Type 2 deck he’s running through the local tourney! How did he do and what did he play?
