Magical Hack – Kyoto By The Numbers

Friday, March 6th – While I would be content to talk about playing Faeries in Extended till I am blue in the face, another near-miss at a Top 8 cannot hardly compare to the Pro Tour this past weekend in Kyoto…

Friday, March 6th – While I would be content to talk about playing Faeries in Extended till I am blue in the face, another near-miss at a Top 8 cannot hardly compare to the Pro Tour this past weekend in Kyoto…

Friday, March 6th – In the forum thread to my column last week, a poster asked if I’d go into more details on the decisions I made when assembling my Ancient Ziggurat deck for the StarCityGames.com $5000 Standard Open. Given that another Ziggurat deck just made a huge splash in Kyoto, being pretty much the only new and innovative deck to come out of the tournament, I figured it would be worthwhile going over the choices I made.

Thursday, March 5th – Now that the Pro Tour is mixed-format discipline, specific format specialists such as Quentin Martin are opening their minds to the other side of the game (whatever it may be). Today, Quentin examines a few of the Standard decks that caught his eye from Kyoto. The first? Black/White Tokens…

Thursday, March 5th – Grand Prix: Chicago kicks Legacy into firm focus weekend, and Richard Feldman is ready. He believes that Dredge, that old graveyard warhorse, is the most powerful strategy in the format. In today’s Deep Analysis, he breaks down his own build of what he believes is a format-warping archetype. Some of the inclusions – and, more significantly, the omissions – may raise a few eyebrows…

Thursday, March 5th – Each action made in a game of Magic has one simple principle behind it: in some way or another it serves to further its controller’s course of victory. Whenever your opponent does something during a game, he or she is taking that action because they believe it will ultimately help them achieve victory. Your opponent has a plan in their mind, and “all†you have to do is figure out what it is.

Thursday, March 5th– In this week’s Unlocking Legacy, Adam tells us a little about what excites him about GP Chicago, and a lot about what you can expect. If you’re unfamiliar with the Legacy format, be sure to look here first, and make sure you don’t get surprised by some strange card interactions!

Thursday, March 5th – My name is Nicholas, and I’m an Elder Dragon Highlander junkie. I know that I mentioned an article about making tournaments more fun… but this article is not that article. However, playing EDH at a tournament is guaranteed to make it more fun, so I hope you’ll accept this tangential compromise.

Thursday, March 5th – Last week, I looked at the changes in core sets on a broad level. Today, I want to crunch some numbers with Constructed in mind. Let’s see whether the new core set and rotation policies help or hurt Constructed.

Wednesday, March 4th – The new Standard metagame, shaped by the shenanigans at Pro Tour: Kyoto, is likely packed with Boat Brew, Five-Color Control, and the ever-popular Fae. In today’s Down And Dirty, Kyle brings us a fascinating Tezzeret deck that preys on the format’s premier strategies…

Wednesday, March 4th – With Pro Tour: Kyoto firmly behind us, Sam Black recounts his sterling performance while piloting the Faerie menace. Today’s Black Magic sees Sam provide a rundown of the highs and lows from the first day of competition…

Wednesday, March 4th – I played a PTQ this past weekend. I showed up with Naya Burn, went 5-1-1, and missed Top 8 on breakers. Virtual Top 8s are the worst kind. Today’s article will be in two sections. The first will be a quick tournament report and some thoughts on the deck I played. The second will the details of the deck and boarding plans in various matches.

Wednesday, March 4th – In every game of Magic you play, there are two options. The correct play, and everything else. There exists in a Perfect Game-state, a game state which you are striving for. Every decision you make while playing is your attempt to achieve that perfect game state. Meanwhile, your opponent is not only trying to get to their perfect game state, but to also prevent you from getting to yours.

Wednesday, March 4th – Hello all, and welcome back to the article that whets your appetite for the casual. I am your chef, and today I want to build some decks. Twice during this past week, I brainstormed ideas that involved changelings, so I thought, why not write an article where every deck is built around changelings?

Wednesday, March 4th – We have had a week to mull over the big announcement of “Magic 2010” or “M10” that is the major changes to core set with Tom, Gavin and Eric weighing in on the changes. Tom was also able to grab Aaron Forsythe for a 30 minute interview about M10! PT: Kyoto was this weekend with Gabriel Nassif declared champion. And Tom and Gavin are both attending GP: Chicago and flexing their Legacy muscles.

Tuesday, March 3rd – With the recent changes to the Pro Tour structure, deducing the best decks and strategies in Standard post-Kyoto is trickier than usual. In today’s Sullivan Library, Adrian takes us through his data-mined Top 8, factoring in a number of previously-unconsidered tangibles…
