Tuesday, April 13th – There is a type of time in Magic writing that I call “The Lull.†It’s when there aren’t really any relevant formats to talk about. The PTQ season is over and the new set isn’t released so I can’t talk about the upcoming formats with any actual knowledge. There aren’t real tournaments happening so tournament reports aren’t an option either.
Tuesday, April 13th – In the second half of his Deck Tech article on the fascinating Blue Lands strategy in Legacy, Doug looks at how to sideboard against the most popular decks in the format. Monday, April 12th – Before Grand Prix: Oakland, Conley Woods showed me his Bant deck and I opted not to play it. Naturally, Conley made Top 8 and I didn’t make Day 2. But this wasn’t the first time that had happened either…
Monday, April 12th – Last week, we left off with Starship Troopers after an 8-1 record on the first day of Grand Prix: Houston. Now, Grand Prix tournaments are incredibly large compared to most Magic tournaments, which makes making Top 8 that much more difficult. With that said, I knew that doing well on Day 2 would be very hard, since those remaining in the tournament were probably solid players.
Friday, April 9th – The day before leaving I woke up to the following Facebook status: “Brian Kowal is in Kuala Lumpur. As far as I can tell, it’s just a big mall.” I chuckled, after all the tournament site was part of one of Malaysia’s largest megamalls, and during a tournament there is little time or incentive to get out and see anything else. Leave it to Mr. Kowal to make the best tongue-in-cheek quip about any situation.
Friday, April 9th – My last article, In Search of Flash: Reanimator in Legacy, concluded with a potential Reanimator list based in part on Steve Sadin’s winning Hulk Flash deck from Grand Prix: Columbus 2007. The list was a merger of Steve’s list and Andres Mullers’ list from Grand Prix: Madrid 2010. The idea was to retain the strengths of both decks as much as possible.
Friday, April 9th – If you’re looking for excitement over Rise of the Eldrazi, you’ve come to the right place! What’s my favorite Magic set of all time? The newest one, and right now that’s ROE. While the prudent thing would be to hold off talking too much about the set until the full spoiler is available, I simply can’t wait that long.
