The nearly 200 players who showed up for the StarCityGames.com Legacy Open in Nashville all had one question on their mind: how would of Mirrodin impact the Legacy format? The new set’s influence was felt from the first round as Affinity cluttered the tables. With powerful new additions to the archetype in the form of , , and Galvanic Blast players were looking to see if it could return to is previous prominence in Magic. Before long, the answer was in: not this weekend in Nashville. Midway through the day, there were barely any robot players to be found at the top tables!
Instead, Rion Marmulstein’s innovative combo, powered by and abusing the graveyard interaction between the Ooze, , and , became the talk of the tournament. By slotting the combo into the shell of a Survival Madness deck, Rion gave himself an additional means of instantly winning outside of the red zone and by dealing a gigantic amount of damage to anyone unprepared for his trick. The innovation was good enough to send him off to a 6-0 start, allowing him to double draw into the Top 8.
His trip ended there, however, as he was felled in the Quarterfinals by Zack Strait. But his deck’s engine, , was everywhere to be seen. A full 75% of players in the Semifinals ran the enchantment, and both of the Finalists used it. Ultimately it was Jessie Butler’s white-green version that took down Zack Strait’s blue-green traditional build to claim the top spot.
The 2010 StarCityGames.com Legacy Open champion in Nashville is Jessie Butler!
