Daily Digest: The Maverick Himself

The #SCGINVI is upon us, and it may seem tempting to rule out the fair decks of the format. But as one popular grinder showed us, Mother of Runes and Thalia may not be as fair as you think…

There used to be a paper-rock-scissors paradigm to explain the health of formats. One deck archetype would prey on another while another preyed on that one
and so on and so forth. This obsolete teaching tool has never been more useless than in Legacy, where a deck can shift gears and steal wins out of nowhere
against pretty much anything.

For a long time now, the formerly popular Maverick archetype fell out of favor due to a perceived weakness to “unfair” combo decks. Playing with power and
toughness just wasn’t very powerful when your opponent was putting Emrakul or Griselbrand into play on turn 2.

How does Mother of Runes beat Past in Flames?

How does Knight of the Reliquary help you against Goblin Charbelcher?

Well, sometimes Thalia gets in under Sneak Attack. And sometimes Scavenging Ooze eats the graveyard before a reanimation spell comes online. And sometimes
Deathrite Shaman beats Dredge all by himself.

And sometimes? Sometimes, the room shows up with Delver of Secrets and David McDarby beats everybody.

Fair and square.
