In one of the largest Legacy events in Florida history, the StarCityGames.com Open saw over 120 competitors squaring off to determine who would be crowned champion. The previous afternoon it had been former Pro Tour champion Charles Gindy taking the title, and he started the Legacy portion of the event off strongly at 3-0. But the wheels came off shortly thereafter.

A second player from Saturday’s Top 8 who performed well on the day was Taylor Raflowitz. The finalist from Saturday was in the hunt all of Sunday, but suffered the ignominy of a 9th place finish. Still, the extra Open points he picked up will help him in his quest to become Open Player of the Year. One previously successful player quietly making a run in Legacy? David Sharfman. The two-time Nationals Top 8er brought black-red Goblins to battle, and the tiny green creatures went to work for him. He ripped off enough wins to make the Top 8, and from there it was all David.

In the Quarterfinals he took down Lewis Laskin’s innovative Bant deck in three games. The Semifinals saw him favorably paired deckwise against Mike Brady’s Merfolk deck, but in all their matches against one another David had never defeated Brady. But it was his day, and he swept the match with ease. That left just Zack Wilson in the Finals, and his Aggro Loam deck just couldn’t keep up with David’s speed.

It was a record smashing weekend at the StarCityGames.com Open-Indianapolis! The Legacy event saw the old attendance record smashed by 50+ players! And if you had told the nearly 300 competitors this morning that a Monoblack Control and Goblin deck would make the Top 8, most of them would tell you you were crazy. But you wouldn’t have been.

Craig Wostratzky didn’t let an odd deck choice slow him down on his way to the Top 8 ranked first out of the Swiss. And Nick Montaquila wasn’t afraid to run the red tribe of Goblins on his way to the Top 8. But the two weren’t meant to take the title. Instead, it was Chris Woltereck’s day to shine. Playing his third Legacy event with 43 Land, Chris made it to a 100% Top 8 ratio with the deck. His latest version gutted the red cards for Intuition and a heavier reliance on Academy Ruins and Tolaria West. That innovation proved to be the key for his success as he Mindslaver locked opponent after opponent.

Tariq Zahzam has had a long weekend of Magic. His friend Alex Bertoncini was at the tournament hall late Saturday night, busy winning the title of Standard champion. On Sunday, in Legacy, it was Tariq’s turn. He ran the tables in the Top 8 after making the cut to the single elimination rounds in a commanding 2nd place. His Blue-Green Fish powered through two Bant decks and the mirror.

Meeting him in the finals was Calosso Fuentes. Fuentes’ Counter-Top deck had lost only two matches on the weekend. Unfortunately for him, they were all against the players who would face him in the Finals: William Greer and Tariq Zahzam. When Tariq got the Semis dubya, it was all but good night for poor Fuentes.
