Practical Legacy – Suicide’s Dilemma

Visit the StarCityGames.com booth at Grand Pris: Washington!
Thursday, May 13th – The Suicide archetype has an impressive record of success in Legacy’s history. Earlier builds like Deadguy Ale (B/W), which were slower but much more disruptive, made an early splash. As the metagame and the card pool changed, so did the design of Suicide decks. There was a brief period where Red Death (B/R), a much more aggressive deck using cards like Phyrexian Negator and Lightning Bolt, performed very well.

Best of the West – Manabases in Action

Thursday, May 13th – In the last week hanging out with Zvi Mowshowitz, he said something that struck me: approximately, ‘I don’t build decks the way most people build them. First I look at the mana and what I can do with it, and then build everything else on top of that.’ This didn’t come as too much of a surprise to me since land selection is the first step of every deck design in my process, but I had been overlooking the fact that most people do not do this.

The Kitchen Table #337 – Lynxes, Lions, Totems, and White

Thursday, May 13th – In Magic, there have been a handful of cards that have been printed with activated abilities that can be triggered by opponents. Going all the way back to Arabian Nights with Ifh-Biff Efreet, this has been so. Some of those cards everyone will want to activate, like Squallmonger. Others will only want one person to activate them, like Zerapa Minotaur.

Wednesday, May 12th – One of the fastest and most devastating decks in Legacy, Reanimator morphs into a different animal when faced with a mirror match. With symmetrical cards like Show and Tell or Exhume, it is easy to help an opponent out while executing your game plan. In this article, Doug goes over the common card interactions and illustrates how cards like Entomb change how mirror matches are played out. Find out why you shouldn’t side out all those big monsters and why your Show and Tells depend on your Duresses, all in this week’s Legacy’s Allure!

Tuesday, May 11th – Grand Prix: DC is just around the corner, and there are a lot of things to discuss. First of all, Jund is still a big contender in the metagame, despite what some people might say/think. It did get second at the StarCityGames.com Atlanta Standard Open, and if built differently it could have a much better chance against the new Super Friends (Planeswalker) deck.

Embracing The Chaos – The Advantage of Second-Best

Tuesday, May 11th – I’ve long been a proponent in multiplayer games that being best isn’t always best. Building a power base while others are charging out of the gate and becoming the threat—which must immediately be dealt with—has served as a strong strategy for as long as I’ve played EDH. We’ll see how that strategy plays out in the latest installment of Armada Games’ EDH League.

Tuesday, May 11th – I was privileged enough to be able to speak with Doug Linn about his most recent article on Legacy speculation before it went live, and we found a few areas where we disagreed. Considering my main body of work deals with speculating on cards and adding value to your collection by buying, trading and selling in the most informed and efficient way possible, I’m glad to have the opportunity to weigh in on the subject.

Fishing Lessons – Taking a Walk in the Fog

Visit the StarCityGames.com booth at Grand Pris: Washington!
Tuesday, May 11th – The trouble with Fog decks is that they suck. The strategy is inherently flawed: You wait out their gameplan and then kind of incidentally kill them. The problem is that, in order to fuel your Fogs, you need to play Howling Mine effects which makes sure that your opponent has enough gas to finish you off if you ever stumble. So why am I here to tell you to play a TurboFog deck?
