Weekly MTG Previews Lathril, Blade of the Elves and Ranar the Ever-Watchful From Kaldheim

Show unveils new legendary creatures for Kaldheim Commander decks and teases new mechanic.

Weekly MTG recapped the week of Kaldheim previews and showed off the Commander deck headline cards — Lathril, Blade of the Elves and Ranar the Ever-Watchful!

Blake Rasmussen and Steve Sunu went over all the Kaldheim cards from Metal Week and played a quick video featuring parts of all the bands that participated in the week’s previews. They also played the Kaldheim set trailer:

After covering everything that was previewed this week, they showed off the face cards for the two Commander decks. Check out Lathril, Blade of the Elves and Ranar the Ever-Watchful!

First up is the Golgari Elf Noble:

Whenever Lathril, Blade of the Elves deals combat damage to a player, create that many 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature tokens.

Dealing damage will get you at least two tokens, but if you manage to buff the power you’ll be rewarded with even more Elf Warriors. Then once you amass an army of Elves, use the next ability.

T: Tap ten untapped Elves you control: Each opponent loses 10 life and you gain 10 life.

Bang! If you’re looking for a way to start taking out multiple players at once, Lathril has got your back. While it won’t one-shot players unless they have already been beaten down, multiple activations should allow you to win out of nowhere.

The Azorius legendary creature stole the show with a new mechanic, but without explaining what it does. Check out Ranar the Ever-Watchful.

Similar to Lathril, Ranar is four-mana 2/3 but with flying and vigilance. It also shows off foretell for the first time!

The first card you foretell each turn costs 0 to foretell.

Ranar will allow you to foretell for free, now we just have to figure out what the mechanic actually does and how much it normally costs.

Whenever you exile one or more cards from your hand and/or permanents from the battlefield, create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying.

Ranar generates its own tokens when you exile cards and the “from hand” part could hint at foretell doing something with exiling cards from your hand.

What do you think of the new legends from Kaldheim‘s Commander decks and which do you want to build around? And what will foretell do?
