Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY is the best selling set of all time… and it hasn’t even been released yet.
In recent years, Universes Beyond crossover sets have become a hugely successful part of Magic’s product lineup. Thanks to Universes Beyond, fans of some of world’s most popular media franchises have been exposed to Magic for the first time, leading to the game being propelled farther than ever before in main-stream entertainment fields.
Despite the widespread success of past Universes Beyond sets like The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, cards from these releases have traditionally been excluded from Magic’s Standard format for various reasons. Starting with the release of MTG—FINAL FANTASY however, Wizards of the Coast is removing that restriction, and all future Universes Beyond sets will be legal for Standard play.
This year alone, we’ll have three massive Universes Beyond expansions with MTG—FINAL FANTASY leading the charge. Looking ahead, Marvel’s Spider-Man swings into Standard this September, and Avatar the Last Airbender closes out the year in late November. With this in mind, it’s important to note that the legality shift will only affect Universes Beyond sets from MTG—FINAL FANTASY forward. Past Universes Beyond releases will remain legal only in Eternal formats.
