Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has released their MTG Arena State of the Game update article for Streets of New Capenna.

Explorer Format Reveal

Explorer is a “Constructed, non-rotating, “true-to-tabletop” format using all the Pioneer-legal cards available on MTG Arena.

  • It will feature the same Constructed queues and events available for Standard.
  • It will begin with the same ban list as Pioneer, but we may need to manage it separately (more on that below).
  • It will be available in MTG Arena for deck building with the game update available today, April 21.”

Players can enjoy “Best-of-One and Best-of-Three matches for both ranked and unranked play, Explorer-format Constructed events, and specialty events like the upcoming Explorer Metagame Challenge…” and WotC plans to support the format the same way they do Standard.

Eventually, WotC plans to retire Explorer and have Pioneer take its place. While they expect it to take several years to get the format as a whole together, all the essential cards legal in Pioneer will be added first, starting with Historic Anthology 6 coming later this summer.

The format will follow the current Pioneer ban list, however if cards become problematic in the meantime, they will be outright banned, not rebalanced or suspended. This is because Explorer is “meant to mirror a tabletop format, so a card will either be playable, or it will be banned.”
