AuthorSheldon Menery

Magic Judge Hall of Famer Sheldon Menery was one of the most influential judges in the history of the game. He pioneered Commander and was a founding member of the Commander Rules Committee. After a seven-year battle with cancer, Sheldon passed away in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and respect, turning acquaintances into friends, and friends into family. “I count myself in nothing else so happy as in a soul remembering my good friends.” - William Shakespeare, Richard II

Embracing the Chaos – EDH Theory: Chasing the Planes

read Sheldon Menery every week... at StarCityGames.com!
Thursday, September 17th – I’m back in the saddle at StarCityGames.com, and I couldn’t be happier about it, although you’ll find this column quite different from “Ask the Judge.” When Pete approached me about doing a mostly-about-EDH-but-sometimes-about-my-other-exploits column, I knew the format had arrived…

Elder Dragon Highlander Update

ELDER DRAGON HIGHLANDER UPDATE
Before Worlds, I wrote about the Elder Dragon Highlander format, complete with a deck competition and challenge at Worlds. Today I’ll be reporting some updates to the format, as well as issuing a new challenge.

FINAL JUDGEMENT: “How Good Is Life Gain Against R/G Beats?”

What began with a heartwarming welcome and a fast start ended with a rude smack in the face. Such is my tale from Regionals ’03 – and it has pictures!

Think You Have What It Takes To Be A Judge?

Then step up to the plate and prove it! On Saturday, May 17th, Level III Judge/StarCityGames.com Rules Guru Sheldon Menery will be attending the Richmond, Virginia Scourge Prerelease!

His mission? To test and certify as many qualified judges as he can! Judge certification candidates should be well-versed in Magic’s Comprehensive Rules, the Magic Floor Rules, the DCI Universal Tournament Rules, and the DCI Penalty Guidelines.

Interested in testing with Sheldon? For more information… well… ask the judge!

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Taking Jim At His Word

I read Jim Ferraiolo’s article about his B/G Oversold Cemetery deck with great interest, because it’s a style of deck I love. I decided to take it to a tournament as a pre-Regionals run; how did his deck do in a real-world test?

Final Judgement: Pro Tour Chicago ’03

Chicago is one of the few cities to which I can go where it’s colder than home. Lisa and I blew into the Windy City for the ’03 installment of the Pro Tour on the tail of the arctic wind. Fortunately, the weather was the only low point of the weekend, and we stayed inside enough to not have to worry about it.

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Grand Prix Los Angeles

My formal report about Head Judging Grand Prix Los Angeles is on the DCI Judge page; this report contains some of the other stuff that went on over the weekend. At the end, I’ll tell you how I got a well-known Pro Tour bad boy to be on his best behavior all weekend.

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Alaska States

Looking back, I was always on the verge of winning the games I lost. That means that I either made some mistakes or the deck wasn’t quite fast enough. Careful review of the games reveals the former not to be the case, so I must fault my design – any suggestions are appreciated, ’cause I’m gonna stay rogue for now.

FINAL JUDGMENT: States 2002 Rulings

Sheldon wraps up the relevant rulings on cards he’s pretty sure you’ll see at States! Check here before you to go make sure you don’t get cheesed out thanks to your misunderstanding!

And remember, Sheldie sez: If you’re not sure, call a judge!

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Playing Around, Part II

My foray into mediocrity at the last Houston Qualifier led me to try it again at one of the early PT: Chicago Qualifiers. After all, what’s a better way to spend an afternoon than going 3-3 with your friends?

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Playing Around

It’s over. OBC, thank God in heavens, is dead and finished. So why are we publishing this report? Well, for two reasons: One, SHELDON’S BACK FROM SAUDI ARABIA AND WRITING! Secondly, not only is it a report, but it’s also a handy primer on the cards that Sheldon played with! So how’d he do?

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Good-bye Doesn’t Mean Forever

Most of you who are regular readers my columns know that I’m in the US Air Force. Now I’m getting the opportunity to go off to somewhere a little more exciting for a few months.

FINAL JUDGEMENT: What’s All This Madness?

I’ve gotten many questions lately about Madness, especially the”until next time you pass” part of it. It’s pretty straightforward if you break down all the steps… And I’ll show you how to break it down.

FINAL JUDGEMENT: Tale of Two Kitties

Apparently enraged by the fact that Anthony Alongi’s dogs can write columns, Sheldon’s cats leap to the keyboard! And actually produce words, not just broken laptops!

FINAL JUDGEMENT: One Man’s Odyssey (Rochester Draft… And More)

Sheldie jumps on the Misetings bandwagon with savage tings, hops on the Rizzo bandwagon with gratuitous photos, and the Ferrett bandwagon with footnotes! What’s left! A fun report, that’s what.
