ELDER DRAGON HIGHLANDER UPDATE
Before Worlds, I wrote about the Elder Dragon Highlander format, complete with a deck competition and challenge at Worlds. Today I’ll be reporting some updates to the format, as well as issuing a new challenge.
What began with a heartwarming welcome and a fast start ended with a rude smack in the face. Such is my tale from Regionals ’03 – and it has pictures!
Then step up to the plate and prove it! On Saturday, May 17th, Level III Judge/StarCityGames.com Rules Guru Sheldon Menery will be attending the Richmond, Virginia Scourge Prerelease!
His mission? To test and certify as many qualified judges as he can! Judge certification candidates should be well-versed in Magic’s Comprehensive Rules, the Magic Floor Rules, the DCI Universal Tournament Rules, and the DCI Penalty Guidelines.

I read Jim Ferraiolo’s article about his B/G Oversold Cemetery deck with great interest, because it’s a style of deck I love. I decided to take it to a tournament as a pre-Regionals run; how did his deck do in a real-world test?
Chicago is one of the few cities to which I can go where it’s colder than home. Lisa and I blew into the Windy City for the ’03 installment of the Pro Tour on the tail of the arctic wind. Fortunately, the weather was the only low point of the weekend, and we stayed inside enough to not have to worry about it.
My formal report about Head Judging Grand Prix Los Angeles is on the DCI Judge page; this report contains some of the other stuff that went on over the weekend. At the end, I’ll tell you how I got a well-known Pro Tour bad boy to be on his best behavior all weekend.
Looking back, I was always on the verge of winning the games I lost. That means that I either made some mistakes or the deck wasn’t quite fast enough. Careful review of the games reveals the former not to be the case, so I must fault my design – any suggestions are appreciated, ’cause I’m gonna stay rogue for now.

My foray into mediocrity at the last Houston Qualifier led me to try it again at one of the early PT: Chicago Qualifiers. After all, what’s a better way to spend an afternoon than going 3-3 with your friends?
It’s over. OBC, thank God in heavens, is dead and finished. So why are we publishing this report? Well, for two reasons: One, SHELDON’S BACK FROM SAUDI ARABIA AND WRITING! Secondly, not only is it a report, but it’s also a handy primer on the cards that Sheldon played with! So how’d he do?
