Exploring RBC: Control

Josh rounds off his excellent series on Ravnica Block Constructed by examining some possible Control builds. Exploring RBC: Mid-Range Decks

Josh continues his excellent series examining the popular archetypes for the Ravnica Block Constructed metagame. Today he deals with the Mid-Range Aggro decks, and presents four decklists for your perusal. Mid-Range Aggro decks need to tread a fine line between pure aggression and rigid control… does Ravnica Block provide the Constructed cards neccessary for such a high-wire performance? Read on to find out!

Sky Swallower and You: The Basics of Ravnica Block Constructed

Pro Tour Charleston is fast approaching, and the Team Block Constructed format remains largely unexplored. Josh presents the first of a series of articles examining the runners and riders of the format. Simic Sky Swallower, Dark Confidant, Giant Solifuge… are these the cards that will break the format? A fine article that opens the door to a promising series.

Sucking With Aggro In Vintage

Did you know that Fish sucks? The format’s perennial Aggro strategy has taken a stout beating of late… but Josh believes the tools are there for the Fish decks to return with a bang! This interesting article examines the tools required to make Fish a competitor in the modern game, and presents three fresh Fish decklists for the old-school Aggro player. In The Know #2: Vintage Play Scenarios Examined

In the second installment of this excellent series, Josh examines two fresh scenarios involving Gifts and Uba Stax decks. In The Know #1: Vintage Play Scenarios Examined

You want to become a better player? What better way to learn than to see the analyzing processes of players better than you? I’ve joked before that when I play Control Slaver, I “just do whatever Rich Shay would do.” This led to the idea of actually asking what he was thinking at a given moment. So, I’ll be presenting play scenarios and then asking some solid technical Vintage players what they’d do.

Veggies and Kelp

It took a while to get over being unable to make new Extended decks. This season saw one of the best Constructed formats in quite some time… though it seems Friggorid will be degrading our wonderful environment next year. Alas. On the bright side, I now have a reason to write about Vintage again. It’s time to celebrate the New Year and give out some vague and inaccurate predictions for 2006!

Needs More Goblins

Pro Tour: LA and the subsequent Grand Prix proved just how far Goblins had fallen in the metagame. Part of this was people simply fleeing the deck without putting real effort into fixing the archetype, but another part was the deck simply lacking the options or sheer power of older seasons. By battling opponents’ Ravinca cards with some of our own, we have my attempt to resuscitate Goblins in Extended.

Evolving No Stick

No Stick is one of the best control decks available to anyone trying to qualify this PTQ season. This deck list has a number of changes from Arita’s PT: LA list, but it’s tested very well. In addition, this version has already qualified my friend Max McCall (T8 GP Seattle), who used it to win a PTQ last weekend. In other words, this deck is simply amazing.

So you want the list? Sure. Here’s Silvestri Scepter. Copying Flores deck names for the win!

Thoughts on Legacy – Flame Vault

Do you know what the hottest new combo deck for post-Ravnica Legacy looks like? Josh Silvestri does and he’s playing both Eve and Gwen Stefani today as he attempts to blow your mind.

SCG Daily – Penguin Overlords and The Bandwagon Effect

Hello again and welcome to the final daily for the week! This has (surprisingly) been a very fun set of articles to do, while at the same time, getting my sense of urgency alive and kicking again. For this daily we’ll start with something a bit light-hearted: Penguins.
