Friday, August 14th – Last week I was musing on playing some sort of Green-based deck with Thousand Year Elixir, and while they all seemed “cool†to some degree, I was also somewhat worried about not having any sort of removal spell available. It would be a bit embarrassing to be fiddling around with my Elf deck and then have someone else “go off†with their Elf combo deck and kill me and I have nothing to do.
Friday, August 7th – You pretty much have to eat, drink and sleep Magic to get on the Pro Tour. That was the conceit that I kept snug in my mind in explaining my relative lack of success. Until I ran across this Tweet on July 23rd: “Guess who just won the last LCQ of the day? Evan Erwin just Q’d for Nats!”
Friday, July 31st – I’ve decided to power down my critique of the current Standard for the duration, even while some of the bigger names in Magic analysis seem to be coming ‘round to my way of thinking. Yes, I still think it sucks, but since I’m not going to be competing in any big tournaments with anything large on the line, why let it bother me?
Friday, July 24th – I love the Treefolk tribal stuff. Sadly, unlike Elementals, Treefolk doesn’t seem to have the juice to really kick ass outside of Doran, and he typically surrounds himself with a more able supporting cast.
Friday, July 17th – The past couple of columns I took a look at Magic 2010 in broad strokes; now that the set is released and I’ve had a chance to hold some of the cards in my hand and play with them, I figured I’d do an overview of the specific cards that have my attention, and touch on the Magic2010 prerelease in Richmond. Friday, July 10th – Regular readers know I’m not exactly thrilled with the Standard format right now, especially since enough half-way decent players netdeck the usual Tier 1 suspects at my local tournaments so that any interesting “Tier X†decks I cook up tend to end up getting crushed along the way.

Friday, June 5th – The Origins theme week over at MagictheGathering.com has had me waxing nostalgic of late. I’ve been playing Magic a really long time – since Unlimited and Arabian Nights packs were available for purchase – but I often forget just how disconnected that time is for many of those who play the game now.

Friday, May 22nd – For the U.S., the Regionals Championships are in the books. For me personally, it’s been an exhausting couple of weeks between the Star City double-PTQ weekend and then Regionals the following week. I characterize myself as a “casually competitive†player, who mostly just likes to have fun with Magic, but who likes to step up and compete when PTQs, Regionals, and States comes around.
