It’s true — and the only thing saving them from breaking the power curve in Magic is their silver border. But what if Unglued and Unhinged were tournament legal? When I wrote my Top 50 Gold Cards article for Wizards, many newer players thought that Psychatog did not deserve the #1 slot. Historically, Psychatog absolutely deserves the title of Best Gold Card of All Time. However, the near-unanimous puzzlement amongst newer players over the placement of Tog got me thinking — how good would Psychatog be if it were Standard legal right now? Wizards of the Coast has been making a push to make the Pro Tour more appealing to the average player. They’ve replaced monetary awards with travel vouchers, booked several Pro Tours in highly desirable travel locations (the Louvre, Prague, Hawaii), and began the Magic Hall of Fame. These innovations have been coupled with popular changes to the Pro Tour itself, but have these tactics worked to pull the non-Pro player into the world of the pro? Not as much as Wizards would have liked.
