Ah, spoiler season. It seems like only three months ago that we were going over the Avacyn Restored spoilers…because it was. But that doesn’t make this spoiler season any less exciting!
Much change is expected with the release of M13. The developers of the newest base set have worked long and hard and have made some big changes to the base set. The return of the exalted mechanic, some interesting reprints, some surprising cuts, and the first base set multicolored card, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, are all new and exciting things occurring in M13. And while M12 doesn’t actually cycle until the release of Return to Ravnica, it does put all of the cards that aren’t returning in M13 in a three-month lame duck period. So play those Mana Leaks and Titans while they’re playable folks, because they are not long for the Standard format.
One of the cards to cause quite a stir on Twitter was Sublime Archangel. Some pointed out its playability in Standard. Some expressed excitement in casual formats. And still others commented on its decidedly musical name. Let’s see what the Magic community had to say about Sublime Archangel:
M13: Sublime Archangel, Creature – Angel 2WW 4/3 Flying, exaltedOther creatures you control have exalted.! bit.ly/LK78K7
— MTG Salvation (@mtgsalvation) June 11, 2012
(Chris) I hate to say this, but I kind of like Sublime Angel’s art #mtgm13
— MTGO Academy (@MTGOAcademy) June 11, 2012
whoa, Sublime Archangel was really pushed!!wizards.com/Magic/Magazine…
— blairwitchgreen (@blairwitchgreen) June 11, 2012
Love love love Sublime Archangel. It’s so going into my exalted deck. Didn’t know it was a mythic, though. #mtg #m13 bit.ly/LKOxh1
— Gabriel Wong (@pokemymon) June 11, 2012
@StewartSpeak From a draft balance standpoint, I really don’t want cards like Sublime Angel at anything less than Mythic.
— Steve Guillerm (@steveexplosion) June 11, 2012
Sublime Archangel and the flash Elf are the cards that have me most excited in M13
— J smitty (@Smi77y) June 12, 2012
T2 Knight of Meadowgrain, T3 Midnight Haunting EOT, T4 Sublime Archangel?Suuuure! #mtgcube #SeemsFair!
— Usman (@UsmanTheRad) June 11, 2012
I’m seeing Nearheath Pilgrim into Silverblade Paladin into Sublime Archangel into GG.
— Alexander Carl (@thoughtlaced) June 11, 2012
Sublime Angel requires Pyroclasm in the format, does it not? At least we have Slagstorm and Whipflare yet…
— Jason Ness (@JJNess83) June 11, 2012
Sublime angel seems great, regardless of how many dudes you’ve got.
— Ben Ahrendt (@Panahinuva) June 11, 2012
If Sublime Angel is real, what are the odds we get Temple Soundgarden? Alice in Chains of Mephistopheles? #mtg #MTGM13
— Ross (@BoltTheBird) June 11, 2012
I can’t wait to play Sublime Angel, Krenko’s Offspring, Merfolk of the Pearl Jam, Green Day of Judgment in my 90’s Tunes deck. #mtg #MTGM13
— Ross (@BoltTheBird) June 11, 2012
Â
Of course Magic players would be most excited about an Angel!
But that wasn’t the only card that got Twitter all a-twitter. Luis Scott-Vargas (@lsv) had a pretty nice preview of his own to show the world. And as the world’s biggest Loxodon Hierarch fan, I’m sure he was more than excited to get Thragtusk. In fact, Twitterers think that it and some of the other green cards possibly in M13 add up to be enough to call for a #GreenSummer! Here’s what the Magic community thought of the new green beast to beat:
,/p>
Got a real sweet preview card tonight, a five drop which actually stacks up well against Vapor Snag… channelfireball.com/articles/exclu…
— Luis Scott-Vargas (@lsv) June 14, 2012
So…Thragtusk is a real card. My God, could Restoration Angel get any sicker? Powerful enough to cause Bant Delver? #MTGM13
— Evan Erwin (@misterorange) June 14, 2012
As if blinking Huntmaster wasn’t insane enough, just think about blinking Thragtusk. Disgusting…
— Jonathan Richmond (@norbert88) June 14, 2012
Thragtusk + Restoration Angel + P Image makes for bant pod or straight bant fun for 3 months #m13
— Robert Martin (@TheBeme) June 14, 2012
Wizards must have forgotten about Restoration Angel when they made Thragtusk. Pod just got a lot more exciting.
— Chris Henderson (@chris_henders) June 14, 2012
Dear PodPlayers: we know you hated having to consider Hollowhenge Scavenger for lifegain. Here’s Thragtusk instead!Love, Wizards
— blairwitchgreen (@blairwitchgreen) June 14, 2012
It’s a #greensummer everyone!Prepare to tap forests ya’ll.#realtalk #mtg #m13
— Keith Cooper (@DravenCorvinus) June 14, 2012
So, how about that #GreenSummer? Wizards is just buttering me up…I bet they arent printing green cards for the next year after this…
— Daniel Dusang (@CapnTopDeck) June 14, 2012
This thragtusk. It’s a thing. It does stuffs. No idea how to rate/compare. It just thingily does stuffses #durdlespeak #noideahowtoratethis
— zack levine (@metaknightmare) June 14, 2012
Yay, another green hate card that won’t really do anything (Great Stable Stag, Baloth, etc)
— Chris Mascioli (@dieplstks) June 14, 2012
I’m a huge fan of Thragtusk. Can’t wait to throw my opponents around like a Thragdoll.
— Brian Braun-Duin (@BraunDuinIt) June 14, 2012
Â
Oh, BBD (@BraunDuinIt). You’re a master. Along with LSV and Flavor Text Review author Peter Johnson (@PeterofDays), you have a pretty sick three-man team for pun tournaments.
Alas, from every cloud a little rain must fall. And for #M13, that sadness came in the form of the end of Giant Spider’s run in the base set. As the only card to have appeared in every base set from Alpha to M12, it was a long and arduous journey for Giant Spider. But cuts needed to be made and a 2/4 common with reach was neither particularly creative nor necessary, so it was sent to the bench. I’m sure this isn’t the end of the base set’s most printed card (other than basic lands), but for now let’s all take a moment to pay our respects to Magic’s oldest arachnid. #RIPGiantSpider:
Hoping for a Giant Spider in #M13. Keep the streak alive! #mtg
— Nathan Holt (@WalkThePlanes) June 11, 2012
Can we have a moment of silence for Giant Spider? #MTGM13
— MTG Color Pie (@mtgcolorpie) June 13, 2012
RIP Giant Spider. Your reach into core sets is unmatched. I will get an Alpha version in honor of you.
— Sigmund Ausfresser (@sigfig8) June 13, 2012
I’m crushed. Completely and totally crushed. No Giant Spider in #M13. D:
— Jennifer Dery (@Legenndery) June 13, 2012
With Giant Spider out of M13, I’m trying to figure out how John Becker is going to take pizza /away/ from WOTC.
— Jonathon Loucks (@JonLoucks) June 13, 2012
If we’d all been nicer people this past year maybe we’d still have Giant Spider.
— Inkwell Looter (@inkwell_looter) June 13, 2012
Guys/gals, Giant Spider’s not gone forever. It’ll be back. We’re just exploring a world without it for a little while. It’s what Magic does.
— Mark Rosewater (@maro254) June 13, 2012
Â
There were several other cards in M13 that caused a stir, albeit not quite as thoroughly as those discussed already. For example…
Worldflare:
What are the odds that Worldfire will get banned in EDH?
— Jonathan Richmond (@norbert88) June 12, 2012
@JayBoosh ha ha these tear aways are vintage from 1995!!!I miss the days of Jokulhaups and all the cards like it.
— joelniddrie (@joelniddrie) June 12, 2012
You set the world on fire and I’m just going to fly away. #sublime
— Heather Dawn (@Revisedangel) June 12, 2012
Â
Elderscale Wurm:
@MoxReuby @penguinzorz In fact, the number “7” is found 7 places on the card – that’s so meta!
— Marcus Hensing (@Lobster667) June 12, 2012
Still insanely happy about the seven 7’s on Elderscale Wurm #MTGM13 #Timmyon.fb.me/LGDNBR
— Evan Erwin (@misterorange) June 12, 2012
Prediction:Elderscale Wurm & Serra Avatar are part of 5 color epic creature cycle that replaces Titans in #mtgm13 (7cc is the new 6cc) #mtg
— Alexander Carl (@thoughtlaced) June 12, 2012
Elderscale Wurm: forums.mtgsalvation.com/attachment.php… And, what you should be saying when you cast it: youtube.com/watch?v=aOrvu4… #yourewelcome
— Peter Johnson (@PeterOfDays) June 12, 2012
Â
Odric, Master Tactician:
Look at all these red and white “attack with lots of creatures” cards. These are seeds for something in the next block.
— Alex Spalding (@luminumcan) June 13, 2012
Odric is so sweet. Loving the flavor and the mechanic.
— Pat Buckley (@Capinahab) June 13, 2012
Sean Connery + George Clooney = Odric, Master Tactician
— Alex Spalding (@luminumcan) June 13, 2012
Â
Just to name a few. Phew! That’s a lot of spoiler talk.
But as always, Jon Johnson (@jjflipped) has the last laugh. He recently chided @Wizards_Magic for not putting storm back in the core set, and now he’s noticed yet another conspicuous omission:
I’ve noticed a severe lack of Squirrels in M13…
— Jon Johnson (@jjflipped) June 14, 2012
Â
Although that is a good point. As you all know, the only thing that Magic players love more than Angels is Squirrels!
Here’s my handle. Tweet me maybe?
