A Farewell Letter

Steve Sadin waves good-bye and is onto bigger and better things. Here’s to a year of superb content management, a year of tremendous growth for StarCityGames.com, and a year full of good times…

This isn’t easy for me to write, but I recently resigned from my position as the StarCityGames.com Content Manager in order to take a position as a Producer overseeing the design and development of digital games for an up-and-coming firm in New York.

I’ve played Magic for more than half of my life—and when I began really diving into the game competitively, I would find myself at my computer repeatedly hitting refresh (on my AOL dialup connection) beginning at 11:58PM EST and not stopping until SCG’s articles went live at midnight.

Three years and after a lot of encouragement from Brian David-Marshall, Mike Flores, and Ted Knutson (who was SCG’s Content Manager at the time), I got my start writing for this very site.

Fast forward another six years and a few thousand more hours of playing, and writing, about Magic—and I found myself working towards a career in economics that was making me pretty miserable.

At this point, I just didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I had loved Magic for as long as I could remember, and I yearned to get myself re-immersed in the game—but I didn’t think that I was in a position where I could support myself solely by playing and writing…

…so when I heard that the StarCityGames.com Content Manager position was opening up, I knew that it was the job for me.

Fortunately, Pete Hoefling agreed—and the next thing I knew, I was shaping the direction of my favorite website.

Over the course of the next year and a half, I got the opportunity to help make the best, and biggest, independent Magic website of all time become even better, and bigger, than it ever was before.

A few weeks ago, I got offered a fantastic position as a Producer—and as much as I wanted to do that job and continue working as SCG’s Content Manager, I knew that there was no way that I would be able to pull that off for any length of time without seriously cutting corners at both positions.

StarCityGames.com deserves a Content Manager who will dedicate their energy completely to the position.

When he began thinking about possible replacements for me, Pete knew that he was looking for a person who loves Magic, isn’t afraid of some hard work, knows the industry, knows the people, and is bursting at the seams with creative energy.

Fortunately, Pete didn’t have to think for long, as he had a great choice sitting a mere ten feet away from his desk: SCG’s Copy Editor Lauren Lee.

This past year and half has been an amazingly exciting and satisfying experience for me, and none of it would have been possible had it not been for Lauren Lee’s tremendous dedication to her responsibilities as the site’s Copy Editor or the abundance of care, effort, and creativity, that each and every one of the site’s writers put into their work.

I’m going to miss working for StarCityGames.com, but I know that the site is going to flourish under Lauren’s leadership.

Here’s looking forward to repeatedly hitting refresh at 11:58PM!
