SCG Open Series Preview: Las Vegas & Louisville

If you want to play Magic this weekend, you have two fantastic options: the SCG Open Series in Las Vegas and the SCG Classic Series in Louisville.

It’s time to get our noses back to the Grindstone! After a weekend of Gatecrash Limited at a little get-together in Charlotte last weekend, the StarCityGames.com Open Series and Classic Series are both back and better than ever in Las Vegas, Nevada and Louisville, Kentucky!

Let’s begin where most players are going to hope to win big…on the Open Series: Viva Las Vegas!

StarCityGames.com is stopping in Bat Country (I thought we couldn’t stop here…) for our first post-Charlotte stop on the tournament circuit. Brad Nelson revealed Naya Blitz in his premium videos here on StarCityGames.com last week, and soon after his Giant Growth concoction won Grand Prix Quebec City in the hands of Nico Christiansen! But does his Humans build have legs? That’s just one of the many questions we will answer this weekend in Vegas!

Our home for the weekend will be Alexis Park All Suite Resort.

Vegas Venue

Alexis Park is a gorgeous facility to run an event and has fabulous room specials and amenities. It’s a bit off the strip in its own litte world, but it’s not too tough to get around Las Vegas, which is world renowned for its culinary competence. If you have time, I would certainly suggest making a trip to Lotus of Siam a few minutes away. It’s some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had, and it’s worth the trip alone.

We have three alterists joining us in Las Vegas that you’re sure to enjoy!

Eric Claar brings his unique style of alters to the StarCityGames.com Open Series. Known for his minimalist "blueprint" style as well as full art pieces, you can check out his work on Facebook and deviantART. For commissions, you can contact him through Facebook or e-mail [email protected].

Combining the two things she loves most (art and Magic!), Jenn Tande of Cardcandy aims to bring players beautiful altered cards that they can use in sanctioned events. Whether it is for Legacy, EDH, or just your personal collection, Cardcandy’s seamless enhancement and extended art cards are fit for any format. To view examples of her work, visit her Tumblr, or check out her posts in the official altered art thread on mtgsalvation.com. For information regarding commissions and pricing, please e-mail [email protected].

Working hard to bring you the highest quality and most tournament legal alters available as well as amazing third party MTG accessories, Daniel Smith of Elite Alters aims to be your one stop shop for all your alteration needs. Whether it’s seamlessly matching the original card art for an extension, adding your favorite real life / animated characters, or restoring a card back to its original beauty, we can handle the project for you.

Perhaps setting a record for the most Pro Tour Top 8s in the SCGLive booth at any one time (don’t fact check me on that one, just a guess), birthday boy Cedric Phillips and Giant Anthropomorphic Jungle Cat enthusiast Osyp Lebedowicz will be tag teaming this weekend on commentary duty. And there’s no Rest for the Weary this weekend, as Glenn Jones continues to Iron Man his way across the nation as our representative in the Sideboard! Join in on the conversation using the hashtag #SCGVEGAS, and watch all the action on @SCGLive.

That’s the Open Series, but what if you’re closer to the Bluegrass State? Well, you’re in luck because the Unbridled Spirit of Kentucky welcomes the Classic Series to Louisville this Saturday!

Louisville is a hotbed of Magic action that I have visited many times for PTQs, States, and various other cash tournaments, and it never disappoints. One of my favorite stories was the time American Idol auditions were downstairs from the tournament…needless to say, we were very entertained all day. And it is no surprise that this event is being held in the same place as usual for all things American Idol or Magic: The Gathering, the Kentucky International Convention Center.

This Convention Center hosts large events like NCAA basketball tournaments regularly, so it has many fast food restaurants in close proximity. There are a few nicer food options nearby as well, and you should have no problem finding dinner within a reasonable distance.

A pair of alterists will grace us with their presence in Louisville!

Amber Musick will be at this event offering her custom, full-art playmats and tokens as well as creating new works of art and customizing your playmat with original art. Pricing and her current offering of playmats can be found on her deviantART page. You can contact Amber at [email protected] to request a playmat to be picked up at the event.

Blake Meade will be creating altered cards at this event! Check out some of his work on his website, and contact him for custom orders at [email protected].

Every weekend is a tournament weekend for StarCityGames.com!

Good luck, have fun, and win big!
