Daily Financial Value Of Journey Into Nyx (4/15)

In today’s edition of the Daily Financial Value Of Journey Into Nyx, Ben shares his thoughts about the four rares that were spoiled overnight along with three uncommons.

We’re in the home stretch now! Four more rares were spoiled overnight along with several uncommons. Three of these four Uncommons have real-world applications, so I’ll be briefly discussing them in this article as well!

Side Note: My Building On My Budget (or BOMB, if you will) column will be going on hiatus the next two weeks while I concentrate on the Daily Financial Value column. Don’t worry—I have a humdinger (yes, I said humdinger) of a column planned for the return of BOMB!

How I review:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to the card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price (Short Term): The price I believe the card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Born of the Gods.
Future Price (Medium Term): The price I believe the card will be at by the time the next set (M15) comes out.
Future Price (Long Term): The price I believe the card will be at a year from now when the next spring set is released (name unknown still, but probably [Something] of Khanar).

Battlefield Thaumaturge

Starting Price: $2

Current Price: $3

Future Price (Short Term): $4

Future Price (Medium Term): $3

Future Price (Long Term): $3

Forget all of the three-color nonsense that people are talking about with the preview article. Battlefield Thaumaturge reminds me of Nightscape Familiar— it’s not quite as versatile as Familiar (it doesn’t regenerate and doesn’t universally reduce the cost of spells of a certain type, only ones that target), but it’s a huge mana reduction for control decks. Hero’s Downfall, Doom Blade, Mizzium Mortars, Lightning Strike, Magma Jet, Ultimate Price, Revoke Existence (on Gods), and Last Breath are all heavily played Standard cards that benefit by a one-mana reduction from Thaumaturge. Many strive spells become a little more playable (3BB to kill two creatures with Silence the Believers, Launch the Fleet becomes W to target your entire troop), and it pushes some already fringe Standard cards to a more prominent place in the metagame (think Flames of the Firebrand hitting two targets for 1R instead of 2R). I’d keep an eye on Battlefield Thaumaturge—I think it has a chance to be a player in Standard.

Bearer of the Heavens

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $0.75

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.75

Future Price (Long Term):$0.75

Bulk rare. Yes, it’s cute with Boros Charm (make all of your own permanents indestructible), but this is for Commander play.

Daring Thief

Starting Price: $0.50

Current Price: $0.50

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

In a set that has a lot of really good cards, some of the cards have to end up being the chaff of the set. Daring Thief is just the latest in a line of Commander-oriented cards that are slow, clunky, and will probably be semi-fringe popular but not really powerful.

Dictate of Heliod

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $1

Future Price (Medium Term): $1

Future Price (Long Term): $1

The pros are that it has flash and will be popular with casual players. The cons are that it costs five and at that mana cost these sorts of effects don’t end up getting played because they are too expensive. See Collective Blessing.

Changes In Value Since Yesterday

Master of the Feast: From $3 to $4 – There’s a lot of division about this card. It’s undoubtedly powerful but has a powerful drawback.

Prophetic Flamespeaker: From $5 to $10 – We almost sold out of this in a single day. There’s huge demand for this card, but I still personally think it will be a bust.

Uncommons Of Note

Eidolon of Rhetoric: Rule of Law on a creature. Should be Modern playable. Four toughness matters.

Nyx-Fleece Ram: I think we finally have a white “gain a life every turn” card that is going to see Standard play. Huge obstacle for red decks to get through in the early game.

Riptide Chimera: Huge “build around me” card. Again, four toughness matters a lot. Great with cheap cantrips (think Abundant Growth) or leaves play enchantments (Reality Acid). In older formats it could get pretty silly quickly with cards that reset each time they are cast. According to The Source, some Legacy cards that could be put in a deck with this are Solitary Confinement, Mystic Remora, Zur’s Weirding (to make it one sided), Act of Authority, Ancestral Knowledge, Mind Harness, Energy Storm, Elephant Grass, and Sacromancy.

Pack Value

To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:

(2R + 1M) / 80

That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50-$1 bulk rares don’t really amount to “real” value if you’re looking to trade with other players. So I’m omitting the value of any rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).

29 out of the 35 rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!

Battlefield Thaumaturge: $2
Dictate of Kruphix: $3
Eidolon of Blossoms: $3
Eidolon of the Great Revel: $5
Hydra Broodmaster: $2
Mana Confluence: $20
Master of the Feast: $4
Temple of Epiphany: $6
Temple of Malady: $6

Total Rare Value: $51

All ten mythics have been spoiled. Nine of them are above the $4 bulk mythic threshold.

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes: $30
Athreos, God of Passage: $30
Godsend: $15
Iroas, God of Victory: $20
Keranos, God of Storms: $20
Kruphix, God of Horizons: $12
Pharika, God of Affliction: $10
Prophetic Flamespeaker: $10
Sage of Hours: $6

Total Mythic Value: $153

So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:

(2R ($51) + 1M ($153) = $255

$255/80 = $3.1875 value per pack or $114.75 per box

See you tomorrow for the next part of this series!
