It has been a long, long time since we’ve had a card really comparable to Restoration Angel in Standard, but here we are. Glorious Protector is both better and worse than Resto in different areas, leaving an odd middle ground that’s still likely to still be very powerful.
A four-mana 3/4 flyer with flash, Glorious Protector is a decent threat by itself and is also able to be flashed in as a surprise blocker. While Standard may not currently have iconic value cards like Siege Rhino or Thragtusk to be “blinked” by Glorious Protector, it can still gain a ton of value with other enter the battlefield cards like Solemn Simulacrum, Yasharn, Implacable Earth, and of course, Yorion, Sky Nomad.
Lastly, Glorious Protector can also be flashed in in response to an opponent’s removal or sweeper spell, allowing you to exile all your non-Angel creatures to prevent them from dying.
So what do you think of Glorious Protector? Will it be able to fill the giant shoes left by Restoration Angel? Let us know in the comments below!
