Managorger Phoenix can’t block.

Whenever you cast a spell, if Managorger Phoenix is in your graveyard, put a flame counter on Managorger Phoenix for each R in that spell’s mana cost. If Managorger Phoenix has five or more flame counters on it, return it to the battlefield and it perpetually gets +1/+1.

Of the spells with perpetual we’ve seen previewed so far, Managorger Phoenix is definitely a front-runner. A two-mana 2/2, this Phoenix is able to return from your graveyard without having to do any extra work. Just cast a few red spells and you’ve got yourself a free creature. While you do need to cast spells with at least five red mana in their costs, most decks that want to play Managorger Phoenix can meet that requirement in two or three turns, and cards like Burning-Tree Emissary can speed up that process considerably.

While Managorger Phoenix doesn’t have haste, it makes up for it by perpetually gaining +1/+1 each time it returns to the battlefield. As the game progresses, returning multiple copies of Managorger Phoenix, each with a bunch of counters on them, is a very serious win-condition for red decks.

So what do you think of Managorger Phoenix? Will it be included in Historic’s next breakout aggressive deck? Let us know what you think in the comments.
