Phyrexian Triniform Introduces Encore Mechanic From Commander Legends

New mechanic gives creature one last hurrah.

Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), take a look at a new mythic rare debuting the encore mechanic from Commander Legends — Phyrexian Triniform!

A nine-mana 9/9 Golem creature doesn’t impress at first blush, but when you take into account its dies trigger and its encore ability, Phyrexian Triniform becomes quite scary.

When Phyrexian Triniform dies, create three 3/3 colorless Golem artifact creature tokens.

This artifact creature costs a lot up front for nine power, but proves it’s worth the payment if it can’t be dealt with cleanly. On its death you immediately get three more creatures to continue enacting your gameplan, whether it is making extra tokens, taking advantage of extra artifact synergies, or if you’re simply on the value plan. Its death trigger pays off decks looking for sacrifice targets while setting up some big plays later in the game with its encore ability.

Encore 12 (12, Exile this card from your graveyard: For each opponent, create a token copy that attacks that opponent this turn if able. They gain haste. Sacrifice them at the beginning of the next end step. Activate only as a sorcery.)

Encore is a mechanic that lives up to its name. After putting on a show in its first appearance, Phyrexian Triniform says goodbye with a fitting sendoff. By paying twelve mana and exiling it from your graveyard, Phyrexian Triniform comes back in multiple token copies depending on your number of opponents and hunts them down. And if hasty 9/9s aren’t enough to finish the job, you sacrifice them at the end step to get three more golems for each one brought back.

Phyrexian Triniform’s swan song should definitely warrant a round of applause. Now it’s time to wait and see how many more cards with encore are coming in Commander Legends.
