Musician and bearer of the one-of-one, serialized The One Ring, Post Malone, has added another one-of-a-kind Magic: The Gathering item to his collection — an acoustic guitar sporting the Demonic Tutor art from Alpha, hand-painted by the original artist, Douglas Shuler.
The first picture of the guitar was shared by the musician to his various social media accounts yesterday along with two other pictures. No caption or context was included with the post, but comments complimenting the unique instrument still came pouring in, especially among Malone’s Magic-savvy fans who recognized the iconic illustration.
Mark Aronowitz, owner of Mark’s Artist Signing Service, provided some of the background story for the piece in a post on his Facebook page earlier today, stating that he was “…approached by Post Malone’s people about having an acoustic guitar painted for him as a gift…” a few months ago. According to Aronowitz, the project was kept tightly under-wraps, and while he did not detail the full commissioning process, the final product is the “…only Doug Shuler Demonic Tutor guitar in the world.”
One of the game’s most celebrated artists, Douglas Shuler began illustrating for Magic: The Gathering with Alpha (1993), and has amassed a portfolio of over 130 pieces. Shuler’s most iconic works include Serra Angel, Candelabra of Tawnos, and of course, Demonic Tutor.
You can watch a time-lapse video showcasing the hand-painting process for this one-of-a-kind gift over on Shuler’s Instagram page.
