MTG Secret Lair Previews Feature Duskmourn Themes, Ed Repka Art

Ten cards from upcoming Secret Lair drops suggest more Duskmourn-based art to come.

Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair has previewed two upcoming drops themed to the Duskmourn set previewed at PAX West, one based on the Duskmourn Paranormal Frames treatment and the other built around the art of Hellraiser model designer Ed Repka.

The Secret Lair profile on X (formerly Twitter) revealed the drops as two sets of five cards, across four images.

Paranormal Frames

Unlike the Duskmourn Paranormal Frames, which are restricted to instants and sorceries, the first two images show four creatures and one artifact in Paranormal Frames: Phyrexian Metamorph, Dauthi Voidwalker, Magus of the Moon, Cauldron Familiar, and Witch’s Oven.

Phyrexian Metamorph’s image and flavor text, “It could be anywhere. It could be anyone.”, appear to reference John Carpenter’s 1982 film The Thing. Magus of the Moon’s flavor text, credited as a “Numbers station transmission”, alludes to shortwave radio numbers stations, generally believed to be in use as part of spycraft, but also a feature of the paranoid and conspiratorial side of horror.

The other two cards form an infamous combo pairing that got one of them banned in Standard. Cauldron Familiar and Witch’s Oven both have flavor text credited to “audio logs”, a staple of storytelling in horror video games such as BioShock.

Ed Repka

The second set of images shows five cards as imagined covers of a fictional magazine, Horrors from Across the Planes. Each card features art by Ed Repka, whose work includes iconic horror-themed album covers for Megadeth and work on the Hellraiser films.

The five cards with Ed Repka’s art are Ravenous Chupacabra; Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest; Uril, the Miststalker; Koma, Cosmos Serpent; and Doom Whisperer.

The teasers do not include official names of the Secret Lair drops or dates of availability. They do, however, hint that these ten cards will be part of a larger Duskmourn-themed Secret Lair release.
