Menery Details Update To Commander Banlist Page

Lurrus of the Dream-Den being banned in Vintage and not Commander has created an interesting situation for the Commander Rules Committee.

Commander Rules Committee member, Sheldon Menery, has provided details on a recent update to verbiage on the Commander Banned Cards page.

According to Menery, the Commander Rules Committee opted to remove the line “Commander is played with Vintage-legal cards” from the description on their Banned Cards page in order to “decouple” the wording and avoid confusion after today’s Banned and Restricted Announcement, which banned Lurrus of the Dream-Den in Vintage but not Commander.

While the legality of cards in Commander has paralleled Vintage for many years, the banning of the powerful companion from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths marks the end of that distinction. According to Menery, the idea has been a “useful shortcut for years”, but “…wasn’t really a philosophical foundation, [and] it was merely a convenience”.

The next normally-scheduled Commander Rules Committee update is scheduled for June 22.
