Good Morning Magic Talks Die Rolling In Adventures In The Forgotten Realms

Video also previews new legendary creature that rewards high rolling.

Gavin Verhey talked with Corey Bowen, a set designer for Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, on today’s episode of Good Morning Magic to talk about die rolling and how it made it to the new set.

Bowen said that a D&D set is the perfect time to bring rolling d20s into black border Magic as nothing feels quite like playing D&D than rolling d20s. It’s a new take on coin flip cards, like the many that showed up in Modern Horizons 2. One thing they wanted to make sure they adjusted was that most the cards didn’t have a complete fail state like old coin flip cards that gave you nothing if you called the flip wrong. While a card like Treasure Chest has a bad outcome, the majority of cards avoid having negative effects.

Most low rolls will just give you the basic effect of a card but better rolls can improve your spell or creature. Of course, hitting a 20 often rewards you with the strongest bonus possible. Blue and red got most of the d20 rolling cards, similar to how the color pair often got the coin flip cards from over the years.

The duo also had the chance to show off a new legendary creature that rewards you for high rolling your d20s. Meet Delina, Wild Mage.

Delina is the perfect commander for a deck looking to roll some dice and can combo off with a single attack and a bunch of great rolls. Verhey and Bowen mentioned there will be plenty of cards for Commander that care about rolling d20s and that doesn’t even take into consideration the actual Commander products yet to be previewed.

What do you think of Delina, Wild Mage? What cards do you want to put in a deck that Delina can copy?
