Good Morning Magic Details Double Masters Draft Archetypes

Better take notes – Gavin Verhey has everything you need to know about Double Masters Draft archetypes!

Sword of Fire and Ice illustrated by Dan Dos Santos

On today’s Good Morning Magic, Gavin Verhey breaks down which archetypes players should be keeping an eye out for in Double Masters Draft.

According to Verhey, the heavy artifact theme of Double Masters creates two “clusters” in Esper and Jund colors – both of which players should be on the lookout for.

Esper “Artifacts Matter”

Glint-Sleeve Artisan Glaze Fiend Faerie Mechanist

This first cluster is all about gaining value through artifact synergies and battlefield presence. Combining a bunch of artifacts with a card like Glaze Fiend help the player get ahead early, while combos like Sanctum Gargoyle and Executioner’s Capsule provide recurring value.

Jund

Skullmulcher Morkrut Banshee Ravenous Intruder

While still heavily artifact-influenced, the Jund cluster leans more on death triggers and sacrifice synergies. Cards like Deathreap Ritual and Morkrut Banshee utilize the power of Morbid, while cards like Kuldotha Flamefiend allow for a more cut and dry ramp strategy.

Beyond these clusters, four other prominent strategies exist in Double Masters Limited as well.

Selesnya Go Wide

Chatter of the Squirrel Angel of the Dawn Crusader of Odric

Fairly straight forward, the player should aim for cards that generate battlefield presence like Chatter of the Squirrel as well as cards like Angel of Dawn to buff the newly assembled army.

Izzet Cheat Stack

Argivian Restoration Trash for Treasure Bosh, Iron Golem

This strategy aims to make use of the graveyard by combining cards like Riddlesmith with Trash for Treasure to cheaply reanimate big artifact threats like Inkwell Leviathan and Bosh, Iron Golem.

Boros Equipment

Kazuul's Toll Collector Fencing Ace Sword of Fire and Ice

With the heavy artifact theme comes a ton of equipment, as well as cards like Swiftblade Vindicator and Fencing Ace to take advantage of them.

Simic Ramp

Apprentice Wizard Whisperer of the Wilds Yavimaya's Embrace

An oldie by goodie, Simic Ramp aims to utilize efficient mana creatures like Apprentice Wizard to quickly power out finishers like Liege of the Tangle or Yavimaya’s Embrace.
