Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Masters of Modern, check out a card drawing Spirit Rogue from Core Set 2021 — Ghostly Pilferer.
A two-mana 2/1 on the surface doesn’t impress, but once you get Ghostly Pilferer rolling in combat it can be quite the card-drawing engine.
Whenever Ghostly Pilferer becomes untapped, you may pay 2. If you do, draw a card.
Naturally, the easiest way to untap it will be after attacking, so the battlefield will need to be clear or it’ll need some evasion, which thankfully can be found lower in the text box. Ghostly Pilferer doesn’t have to get in combat though; it could be used to crew a vehicle, pay a convoke cost, or even be tapped for another creature’s ability, such as the newly previewed Shacklegeist.
Whenever an opponent casts a spell from anywhere other than their hand, draw a card.
While not necessarily a hate card or a way to prevent players from doing unfair things, Ghostly Pilferer will at least reward you if your opponent is leveraging spells from their graveyard or outside the game. Any creature coming off an adventure will net you a card or if they cast something exiled from Light Up the Stage.
Discard a card: Ghostly Pilferer can’t be blocked this turn.
There’s the evasion Ghostly Pilferer needed. While not only letting you get in for two damage, it’s also a discard outlet with no cost. If a deck in Standard needs a way to fill the graveyard from hand, Ghostly Pilferer does the job and lets you refill later.
With so many moving parts and two relevant creature types, Ghostly Pilferer looks to make an impact on Standard and possibly more. Spirits decks tend to flood out in Modern and Pioneer, so having a way to churn through cards is a great addition.
