Universes Beyond cards will appear in Set and Collector Boosters

Magic: The Gathering players will see more than meets the eye this winter when they open packs of The Brothers’ War and find Transformers cards.

Gavin Verhey and Matt Danner of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) joined the Hasbro Pulse Con stream (around one hour in) and showed off the Universes Beyond Transformers cards that will be appearing in Set Boosters and Collector Boosters for The Brothers’ War. There will be 15 mechanically unique cards that are not part of the main set for The Brothers’ War, but will show up in those boosters. Each bundle for The Brothers’ War is guaranteed to have one Transformers card.

Each card has a normal frame and a Shattered Glass frame and all six that have been previewed so far are legendary creatures. The cards show off two new mechanics: More Than Meets the Eye and Living metal. More Than Meets the Eye is a different casting cost that lets you play the back side of the card by converting it — notably not “transforming” as due to legal and trademark purposes the cards can’t say the robots transform. Living metal lets the creatures that are Vehicles be Vehicles on your turn without a crew cost.

Let’s take a look at the first six cards. Meet Optimus Prime, Hero/Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader and Starscream, Power Hungry/Starscream, Seeker Leader.

Next up are Soundwave, Sonic Spy/Soundwave, Superior Captain and Slicer, Hired Muscle/Slicer, High-Speed Antagonist.

The other two are Goldbug, Humanity’s Ally/Goldbug, Scrappy Scout and Flamewar, Brash Veteran and Flamewar, Streetwise Operative.

The remaining nine Transformers cards were unveiled on October 3, and can be seen here!
