Netflix Magic: The Gathering Show “Not Happening”

Voice actor cast for Gideon Jura confirms the animated show isn’t moving forward

The lead actor from the once much-anticipated animated Magic: The Gathering series for Netflix recently made a statement clarifying the show was “not happening.”

According to an interview from Collider, Brandon Routh confirmed he recorded a voice for the show but said it’s old news that it isn’t happening. When asked about the Magic show during an interview for the upcoming horror film Ick, Routh said, “I’m not sure. I did do a voice for it. As far as I understand, nobody’s put out a press release about it, but apparently it’s not happening. That’s kind of old news. I’m not sure why it’s surfacing again.”

The show, simply titled Magic: The Gathering, was announced in June of 2019 with Joe and Anthony Russo, known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, named as executive producers. The series was said to be in the script phase in April of 2020, but little information followed until the Russo brothers left the project in August of 2021 citing creative differences in handling the intellectual property. Jeff Kline, who was a producer on the Transformers: Prime series, took over as the next executive producer.

Around the same time as Kline joined the project, it was announced Routh was cast as the lead voice actor in the role of Gideon Jura. Routh had worked on a few shows like Supergirl, Batwoman, Arrow, and The Rookie prior to the casting. His next role will be as Hank in Ick, which releases in Canada in September.

IMDB also listed Lexi DiBenedetto as the voice actor for Chandra Nalaar, but the page for Magic: The Gathering still only mentions the existence of a single episode from 2023.

Hasbro CEO, Chris Cocks, last mentioned the Magic: The Gathering show in October of 2023 during the Third Quarter Financial Report conference call. Cocks briefly touched on the show, but said it was “still in the works.” Since then, Cocks has been silent on the status of the show during the Q1 and Q2 Financial Report conference calls in 2024.
