Episode 2 of the Murders at Karlov Manor story picks up with Kaya and Teysa rushing toward the sound of the scream. The pair approaches a locked door, already surrounded by Orzhov house staff. The staff informs Teysa that another staff member had gone to fetch a key for the door, but didn’t know when they would return. Despite her ability to phase through most objects, Kaya is unable to pass through many of the surfaces in the Karlov Manor due to being “ghost proof” for increased security.

As the group grows impatient waiting, the Archon Ezrim approaches along with members of his investigative team. With Teysa’s approval and two swift kicks, the locked door is broken from its hinges and Kaya is able to rush inside.

In the center of the room lay the body Zegana, a prominent member of the Simic Combine. Her body is laid neatly on a pile of coats, her hair posed and hand gripping a black iris flower. Kaya and the others are unable to determine any obvious causes of death, but it’s apparent that whoever did it wanted to leave a message.

Not long after the discovery of the body, Aurelia arrives along with members of her guild to secure the scene, while the Azorius jump into action, investigating every inch of the manor and interrogating each guest. By this point, the Simic’s current Prime Speaker, Vannifar, has been informed of the situation and goes off with Teysa to calm down.

While the Azorius and Boros lead the containment and interrogation, members of Ezrim’s investigative team sit by idly – willing but unable to assist due to restrictions from the two powerful guilds. As Kaya and Aurelia discuss various aspects of the situation, a new party enters the room. Garnering glares from the Azorius, the man introduces himself to Kaya and Aurelia as Alquist “the great detective” Proft.

Wasting no time, Proft swiftly examines Zegana’s remains and determines that the placement of the body and bed of coats represents all ten guilds, despite the Golgari and Dimir not being officially in attendance. Additionally, much to the surprise of those around him, Proft claims that one member of the Dimir was in fact at the party, disguised as a member of the Selesnya.

Accompanied by Kaya, the pair leave the crime scene and venture out into the manor in search of the party crasher. It doesn’t take long for Proft to point out an elegantly dressed woman wearing Selesnya colors as the undercover Dimir spy. Upon calling out to the woman, who Proft identifies as the Dimir assassin, Etrata, the Vampire quickly dashes away towards the Orzhov’s hedge maze in an attempt to escape her pursuers.

After a short pursuit, Proft is able to use his powers to twist and obscure their surroundings, confusing Etrata and causing her to charge head-on into Kellan. The pair falls to the ground and Kellan is able to subdue her long enough for Kaya, Proft, and Azorius authorities to arrive and detain the Dimir assassin.

Episode 3

With Etrata detained as the main suspect and having been removed from the property, the party swiftly ends and guests were allowed to leave. Before her departure, Kaya meets up with Teysa and the two exchange words regarding the political and social chaos sure to come. Teysa concludes the conversation with mention of what she wanted to tell Kaya earlier in the evening just before the murder occurred, but explains to her that it wasn’t the right time to tell her now. The pair parts with Teysa promising to send for Kaya in three days time.

Kaya spends the next three days enjoying the city and listening to the gossip circulating among the citizens. While a majority of the gossip is nothing more than misguided rumors, Kaya learns that the public has become aware of planeswalkers and have all but villainized them after the events of the Phyrexian invasion. Thankfully, Kaya is far enough removed from Ravnica at this point that she is able to move about the city without garnering attention from the commonfolk. While enjoying coffee at a small shop, Kaya is approached by Kellan, who tells her that her presence is being requested by the Agency, specifically by Ezrim.

When pressed as to why Kellan came personally and not a low-level messenger, Kellan tells Kaya that he wanted to ask her if she by chance knew his father (Oko), since they were both planeswalkers. To Kaya’s relief but Kellan’s dismay, Kaya does not know Oko, but promises to relay any information to him should they cross paths. The pair makes their way to the Agency headquarters where Kellan leads Kaya up to Ezrim’s office. The mighty Archon welcomes Kaya and requests her assistance with the case, however she refuses and leaves, planning to planeswalk away after gathering her things.

While Kaya takes care of her business with the Agency, Proft meets with Etrata in the Azorius detainment facility. He pushes her on motive and why she would kill in such a flashy manner and not leave the property before the lockdown. Proft remarks that this style of killing was out-of-character for an assassin of Etrata’s caliber. Praised by his words, Etrata explains that she was simply attending the party undercover as the eyes and ears of the Dimir not in attendance and had nothing to do with the murder. Seemingly convinced of her innocence, Proft makes a deal with Etrata to get her out of detainment in exchange for her help solving the crime. Using his magic, Proft unlocks the cell and gives Etrata his address for the rendezvous.

After leaving the Agency, Kaya is greeted by an Orzhov messenger who gives her a letter from Teysa and tells her to come to the manor. A long walk later, Kaya finds herself back in Karlov manor and makes her way up to Teysa’s chamber. Along the way, Kaya notes the lack of staff and assumes Teysa sent them away in preparation for their private conversation, but once outside of Teysa’s quarters, Kaya smells the scent of blood, and rushes into the room, only to find that Teysa too has been murdered. Next to the body of her long-time friend, Kaya finds a letter that she identifies as Teysa’s handwriting, but is curiously written in Phyrexian script.

Now faced with the possibility that Teysa may have been working with Phyrexia, Kaya knows her only option is to return to Ezrim and work to solve the deepening mystery.
