Brokers Charm Preview

Previewed at the conclusion of Episode 5 was the final Charm in the cycle — Brokers Charm.

For GWU, you get access to one of the following:

Choose one —

Target creature you control gets +1+0 until the end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature or planeswalker an opponent controls.

Destroy target enchantment

Draw two cards.

Bant Charm

Continuing the trend of improving upon the originals, Brokers Charm easily one-ups Bant Charm by destroying enchantments instead of artifacts, dealing damage to creatures and planeswalkers instead of putting a creature on the bottom of the library, and drawing two cards instead of countering an instant spell.

So what do you think of Bant Charm? Can your Bant deck find a home for it?

New Capenna Story Episode 5

After collecting a new weapon and escaping the Maestros Museum, Elspeth regroups with Vivien and Giada atop a perch overlooking the city.

As Vivien departs to conduct a survey of the area, Giada opens up to Elspeth, expressing her concerns that her magic alone will not be enough to “fix” New Capenna. Elspeth reassures her that it’s not her responsibility to fix a broken city relying on Halo as a “flimsy bandage on the wounds of [the] city.” Eventually Vivien returns and the trio depart for an abandoned warehouse below.

After a night of rest, the trio is awakened by scraping metal and shattering glass — Jinnie and the Cabaretti had found them. Giada addresses Jinnie and convinces her to bring Elspeth and Vivien in as prisoners instead of fighting. Despite being prepared to fight, the two planeswalkers go along with the plan in order to gain more information.

The group makes their way through the Mezzio, and approach the door where Elspeth had previously delivered the package for Xander — the Obscura hideout.

Jinnie reveals that the Obscura here are her friends, and have been taking care of the injured Cabaretti leader — Jetmir.

Once inside, they find Jetmir, who is described stable but “ailing”. Before Giada can be utilized for her Halo-making capabilities to heal him, a group of Riveteers traitors burst into the room. The distraction provides Elspeth and Vivien an opportunity to break-free from their captors and reclaim Giada. A fight ensues, in which Elspeth is gravely wounded. Before she falls however, Giada, now cloaked in a radiant light, gives her Halo, and thanks to Vivien, they are able to escape along with the Cabaretti and the Obscura informant. Together, they flee their pursuers and make for underground tunnels leading to the main Obscura stronghold in Park Heights.

As they emerged from the tunnels near the Obscura hideout, it’s revealed that Kamiz betrayed them and let the group into a trap. Jinnie engages with the group of Obscura, while Elspeth gathers Giada and attempt to escape.

Elspeth, Vivien, and Giada escape through the park and into a nearby cathedral. Upon entering, the angelic statues begin emitting a radiant glow, similar to the one that surrounded Giada. Elspeth notices at that moment that she too was emitting a faint glow, and could also hear the chorus of the angels.

Elspeth and Giada had both finally found their “home”. Giada’s in the company of angels, Elspeth’s in wherever the weak needed protecting. Their homecoming was short lived however, as Ob Nixilis enters the cathedral behind them.

Ob Nixilis had come prepared with a group of mercenaries. With her superior crowd-control abilities, Vivien ran to combat them while Elspeth fought one-on-one with the Demon planeswalker. Elspeth managed to land a few glancing blows, but Ob Nixilis was too powerful. On the brink of defeat, Giada came to Elsepth’s rescue. She thanked her for all she did, then a brilliant light erupted from her body, blasting Ob Nixilis away, yet leaving Elspeth unharmed.

Elspeth rose to her feet in time to see the radiant outline of Giada accompanied by several other beings of light. Giada spoke directly to Elspeth, filling her with the confidence to defend New Capenna.

Home was duty.

Family was those she chose to defend.

She’d always had everything she ever needed.

Giada’s sacrifice had not only healed Elspeth’s body and mind, but also bestowed a new weapon upon her — a sword imbued with Halo.

With her new weapon and confidence, Elspeth managed to land a devastating blow to Ob Nixilis’ neck. As the Demon began to bleed out, he planeswalked away before Elspeth could finish him off. The threat to New Capenna had been stopped… for now.

Gathering Vivien, the pair made their way back to the Maestros Museum, where Elspeth was intent on gaining access to Xander’s archives. She was met by Anhelo, who informed her of what happened and that he had been named Xander’s successor. As promised, he gave the two planeswalkers access to Xander’s archives where they learned the truth about New Capenna.

The Angels fought against Phyrexian invaders, but were not strong enough by themselves, so they enlisted the help of the Demon lords. Ultimately, the Demon lords betrayed the Angels and locked them in a stasis where all they could do was provide Halo. This proved to still be enough to repel the Phyrexian invaders.

Along with the archives, they also found a stash of Halo, which, along with their new information, would be brought back to the Gatewatch. Before heading back to Dominaria, Vivien revealed Urabrask’s plan to start a revolution and overthrow Elesh Norn. Equipped with new information and Halo, the Gatewatch could finally take the war to New Phyrexia.

Walking away from New Capenna meant heading once more into that metallic hell. Koth, Melira, Karn . . .

going back meant facing her nightmares and confronting her time there as a girl. It meant another battle, another war.
