Backup And Incubate Are Two New Mechanics Coming In March Of The Machine

First large preview dump for March of the Machine reveals Commander Deck face cards

Illustrated by Scott Murphy

With the official debut video for March of the Machine streaming in just a few hours, Forbes spoiled front-faces of five Battles, two new mechanics, and a handful of Commander cards from the next Magic: The Gathering set.

Check out the front sides of these Battles:

  • Invasion of Ergamon
  • Invasion of Fiora
  • Invasion of Ikoria
  • Invasion of Ixalan
  • Invasion of New Phyrexia

While we still have to wait to see what they can transform into on their back sides, we see these Battles range from single color, to multicolor, and even incorporate X spells. Invasion of Fiora functions as a conditional board clear that can be blinked later for another trip to value town.

The article also showed us two mechanics: Backup and Incubate.

Archpriest of Shadows and Boon-Bringer Valkyrie feature Backup 1.

Creatures with backup 1 allow you to put a +1/+1 counter on a creature when it enters the battlefield, if it targets another creature it gains the abilities of the card with backup until end of turn. This seems like it could scale up with more than +1/+1 counter, but so far we have only seen backup 1.

Merciless Repurposing shows off Incubate 3.

Incubate appears to be an ability that shows up on spells that creates an Incubator token with X +1/+1 counters and then can be transformed into a creature with that many counters by paying two generic mana. This example shows Incubate 3 being taped onto a removal spell for six mana.

We also saw some Commander stuff in the preview, including four Planechase cards.

Finally, the article spoiled the five face-cards for the upcoming Commander decks. Check out:

  • Brimaz, Blight of Oreskos
  • Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy
  • Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener
  • Kasla, the Broken Halo
  • Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir

A huge batch of Multiversal Legends were also previewed. These cards will show up on the bonus sheet for March of the Machine. Feast your eyes on the new art and border treatments for:

  • Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
  • Jin-Gitaxia, Core Augur
  • Niv-Mizzet Reborn
  • Emry, Lurker of the Loch
