Earlier today, leaked images from the May 2023 edition of Game Trade Magazine (GTM), game us the first look at Lorcana’s gameplay, but that wasn’t all that came with it. Check out ten new cards included in Lorcana’s debut set – The First Chapter!
Editors note: This article uses new verbiage native to Lorcana, so be sure to read the gameplay article first!
Up first is Lefou – the zealous sidekick of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. A two-cost glimmer with one strength and two willpower, Lefou is amber-aligned and can be exerted for two lore. When paired with Gaston, his loyal ability reduces his cost by one.
Next is an action card – Just in Time.
Featuring Maui from Moana, Just in Time is a rare, three cost action card that is aligned with amber ink. This action allows you to play a character with cost five or less for free, which needless to say seems very strong. Also of note, this card cannot be used to add ink to your inkwell.
Our second Mickey Mouse revealed so far, this version is a common, three-cost glimmer that is aligned with emerald ink. It has three strength and four willpower and it can be exerted for one lore.
The princess protagonist from Beauty and the Beast, Belle is a three-cost, uncommon glimmer that is aligned with sapphire ink. Belle has two strength, three willpower, and can be exerted for two lore. Her tinker ability allows you to pay one less energy for your next item this turn whenever she quests. This seems like a decent card for decks packed with items.
The hero himself arrives in Lorcana, but only as a common. Hercules costs three to play, has three strength and willpower, and is aligned with steel ink. His bodyguard ability lets the player have him enter play exerted, and any opposing character that wishes to challenge your other characters will have to go through Herc first.
The second Scar to debut in Lorcana’s first set, this Scar is a common and costs four resources to play and has five strength and three willpower. Scar, Fiery Usurper is ruby aligned and exerts for one lore.
The first card revealed from Emperor’s New Groove, Yzma is a two-cost common with two strength and willpower. Yzma is amethyst-aligned, exerts for one lore, and has the ability “You’re Excused”, which allows you to look at the top card of your deck each time she quests, and then put it on the top or bottom of your deck.
The first action song revealed so far, One Jump Ahead is an uncommon that references the iconic song from Aladdin. One Jump Ahead costs two to play, but can be cast for free if you exert a character with cost two or more. When cast, the player will put the top card of your deck into your inkwell facedown and exerted. This seems like a strong card for sapphire decks to help ramp up their inkwell resources.
Dinglehopper is a common one-cost item card that is aligned with amber ink. After being initially cast, you can then exert one card in your inkwell to remove up to one damage from any chosen character.
The third Mickey card to be revealed from Lorcana’s first set, Mickey Mouse, Wayward Sorcerer comes equipped with some interesting new abilities. Aligned with amethyst ink, this super rare Mickey Mouse costs one less resource than his ruby ink counterpart, has three strength and four willpower, and can be exerted for two lore. Those who have seen the classic 1940’s Disney film Fantasia, will also recognize the tie-in with the Brooms in Mickey’s abilities. While we haven’t seen the Brooms yet, being able to reduce their casting costs and return them from the discard pile seems strong.
