Friday, February 26th – I figured by the time this goes up, you will have been inundated with Standard strategy in the wake of Pro Tour: San Diego and leading up to the next big StarCityGames.com Open this weekend, right here in my hometown of Richmond Virginia! Instead of adding my boots to ground well-trodden by guys far more knowledgeable and accomplished than myself, I figured I’d write about EDH again.
Friday, February 19th – In an EDH game, players aren’t locked in to playing against the griefer at the table. They are free to respond in a couple different ways. First, they can gang up on the player to eliminate the griefer before he can get his misery engine going; it’s pretty difficult to stand against a table united against you, especially early on.
Friday, February 12th – Despite the ridiculous winter weather she’s been dishing out against the Mid-Atlantic States, Mother Nature can’t keep a Magic man down. Even as the chance of me making the 30 minute drive to Richmond Comix for FNM and EDH dwindled to an icy and snowy zero last week, I still received my boxes of Worldwake shipped from StarCityGames.com, and eagerly started cracking the packs…

Friday, January 29th – Once upon a time, Jamie Wakefield was the most visible and vocal advocate for Green in Magic, but I was always shouting right along behind him. Now that he’s moved on from Magic, I often feel a responsibility to provide feedback to the guys who make the cards on how well they’re standing by the color Green from the perspective of the fans who play the cards.
Friday, January 22nd – I’ve had a couple of readers ask me my method for taking notes about EDH games, so I’m going to do that today, along with providing some helpful templates to download. I’m also going to provide an outline for constructing an EDH deck based around Omnath, Locus of Mana, an intriguing new Mono Green general from Worldwake.
Friday, January 15th – Ken Nagle was the lead designer for Worldwake, so when I saw the abbreviation for Worldwake – WWK – it was a natural to make the mental connection to WWJD (What Would Jay Do), only Worldwake would be WWK(D): What Would Ken Nagle Do?
Friday, January 8th – One of my favorite cards from Zendikar is Emeria, the Sky Ruin. Longtime readers and friends of mine know my fondness for creature recursion (and in response to Mike Turian’s Twitter question regarding what card I’d most like to see in M11, I quickly replied “Oversold Cemetery”), and Emeria is the near-perfect realization of that theme.
Friday, January 1st – As the Magic Community gets geared up for an extra-exciting year thanks to the StarCityGames.com Open Series & Invitational in 2010, I want to make sure that the more casual players out there don’t think that the weekends are going to be just about big cash prizes and accumulating points.
Thursday, December 24th – For my Christmas column, I had planned on doing a write-up on the inaugural game for my Tibor and Lumia “copy you” EDH deck. Unfortunately we were hit with a pretty significant snowstorm here in Virginia and not too many EDHers mustered out. The good news is we had just enough players to run FNM… and I won!
Friday, December 18th – Are you a pack-cracker? I sometimes feel weird when, after getting my booster box comp for working at prereleases, I go home and rip open all the booster packs for singles to add to my collection or trade binder (to trade for more of what I need).
Friday, December 11th – Man, it feels fantastic to type that title! While I’ve gotten more than a few condolences on my finish (since 2nd place also means you were this close to 1st place), personally I’m just thrilled to have returned to the Top 8 tables of States after way too long…
Friday, December 4th – When I finished last week’s column, I was feeling really good about States. For the first time in a long time, I had a deck concept I was really happy with time to spare. The last task left was to polish the list, and the grinder of choice was Jund. If you can’t at least have a reasonable shot at beating Jund, you shouldn’t play the deck, right?
Friday, November 27th – When I submitted my column last week, I was bouncing between playing my Pyromancer Ascension/Summoning Trap deck, my Eldrazi Goblin deck, and Takagi Yui’s Rite of Replication deck for FNM… Then I watched the video deck tech with Conley Woods from Worlds, and I fell in love with Magical Christmasland.
Friday, November 20th – I realize, in the grand scheme of things, that there are a lot worse things that can happen to you than a run of extraordinary bad luck playing Magic. Ultimately, this is just a game. That said, this is a column about Magic, and bad-beat stories are a time-honored tradition.
