AuthorAbe Sargent

A Commander and casual Magic lover who calls all of West Virginia his hometown, Abe Sargent moved to Michigan for a time, working there for eleven years before heading off to seminary in the North Philly suburbs before finally heading to southwestern Connecticut. He's still not sure how a state the size of Connecticut has its own distinct regions. If you face Abe in a duel, be prepared to face his notorious work of art, Abe's Deck of Happiness and Joy.

Hello and welcome back to the next installment of Magic Taxonomy 201: The Casual Player’s Framework. I’m Professor Abe and today we’ll investigate the fourth Archetype of the Framework — Crazy Combo Man.

SCG Daily – A Deck a Day: …And Justice For All

Welcome back to the Wednesday Edition of All Things Deck here on SCG. This week I’m randomly selecting cards to build decks around. When I select a happy card with my trusty dice, I am then forced to build a deck around it, no matter how boring the card may be.

SCG Daily – A Deck A Day: Growing Volraths

Volrath is mean and nasty. He personally sacrifices hidden creatures (in your hand) in order to pump himself up. He has nasty shapeshifters that are designed to look like the dead. His evil laboratories create new, twisted life. His Stronghold breathes new life into the unliving. Where in here is Volrath a gardener?

SCG Daily – A Deck a Day: Stand for Victory

Hello and welcome back to another set of daily decks brought to you by the Deckmaster General. Reading too many Magic articles may be hazardous to your health.

Welcome back to the series of articles where I explore all of the various types of decks in the Casual Deck Framework. Today we are going to explore the Resource Denial Archetype…

SCG Daily – A Deck a Day: Mail Carrier

Welcome to the final installment of the random creature challenge, the game where I choose a random creature type and then have to build a deck around it. From Carriages to Crocodiles, I’ve had to build some wild decks. I use the Mistform Ultimus Watch on the Wizards homepage to randomly choose this creature type. Carriages, Volvers, Nomads, and Crocodiles have all been chosen. What will be next?

SCG Daily – A Deck a Day: Afterwhile, Crocodile

As you may know, I’ve been taking a random creature type and then forcing myself to create a deck around said type. On Monday, I pulled everybody’s favorite creature type — the carriage! On Tuesday, it was the Volvers’ turn. On Wednesday, nomads were in the spotlight. Who will get picked on today?

The Kitchen Table #146: The Casual Metagame #3

Hello and welcome again to the newest installment of our weekly trek through the five corners of casual Magic. I am examining each Archetype in an article, and then looking more closely at the Subtypes within that Archetype. I’ll also build a quick deck for each Subtype in order to demonstrate what I am discussing with a solid example.

SCG Daily – A Deck a Day: Time and Tide Wait for Nomad

After two straight days of random creature deck-ness, you aren’t about to see me slow down. We might as well see this theme to fruition. For those who are new to the series, or forgetful, I randomly select a creature type from the Mistform Ultimus Watch on the Wizards website. Then, I build a deck around whatever creature type I select. Monday I had selected everybody’s favorite creature type — the carriage deck. Then on Tuesday, I build a deck of Volvers. What will I select today?

SCG Daily – A Deck a Day: Victorious Volver

I really enjoyed my Carriage deck from yesterday, so I figured that I would continue the theme today. I will select a creature type at random, and then build a theme deck around it. What amazing creature type was selected? Volvers.

SCG Daily – Carriages A-Go-Go!

Abe returns with his popular Deck A Day daily series, and today’s offering is genius. You’re in for a wild ride today… literally.

The Kitchen Table #145: The Casual Metagame #2

I am writing a series of articles that explores the casual metagame, which is far more vast than any given competitive metagame. Any competitive metagame will have only a handful of decks at the top at any time. Even the best metagames, with a variety of solid, winnable decks, would probably not have more than a third of the Subtypes listed in the Framework, if that.

Last week’s article made me realize something important. Some players don’t understand that there is a casual metagame. If you sit down to play some random casual players, there are some things you can expect to see on a regular basis.

The Kitchen Table #143: Casual Eye for the Competitive Guy

Many of the tournament-worthy decks we see to day would be crucified in a casual or multiplayer environment. They are too focused on one goal, or one opponent. Today, Abe takes a look at some of the more powerful decks in Standard, and adapts them for the casual scene. Wanna beat down like the pros? Then this is the article for you…

Abe takes a mighty stab at producing a Snow Matters Five-Color 250-card deck. While not designed to be competitive, it is certainly a lot of fun for the casual player…
