Jilted John

Following the events of the last few weeks (and the fantastic amount of column space dedicated to the departure of one of our communities shining stars), I have decided not to give up Magic – both as a player and as a writer.

Dear Ferrett,

This is not an easy e-mail to write – partly because my emotions are running at a high, but also because my monitor keeps intermittently”switching off” and I can’t see what I’m typinhf. This is, perhaps, the hardest piece of correspondence that any dedicated Magic player ever has to compose – it’s not my (gulps) letter of retirement from the game! Following the events of the last few weeks (and the fantastic amount of column space dedicated to the departure of one of our communities shining stars), I have decided not to give up Magic – both as a player and as a writer.

Many elements have contributed to this decision, not least the opportunity to see if anybody would miss me if I stay. My wife would like nothing better than for me to alphabetically sort small rectangles of decorated casino board for the last time, pack up the back issues of Sideboard and Duellist magazines, and delete my web bookmarks – without her unremitting demands to quit, I’d have jacked it all in a long time ago!

I know that this must come as a bit of a shock to you – and before you attempt to change my mind, let me say that I am fixed and determined in my decision. I would like to apologise to all the readers who will be upset by this course of action – I must follow my heart and not bow to public pressure, as I’m sure you’ll understand.

Finally, I wrote a poem:

You know how much we love to draft

Odyssey and play Constructed Magic but we could not have laughed,

(under the circumstances)

At April 19’s announcement

Rizzo’s pronouncement of leaving

Everybody’s grieving

And I find myself

Lamenting the

Loss of his spleen-venting.

For John has gone

(under, and on, a collectible card-shaped cloud) and I find myself

wondering out loud

“Could anyone take his place?”

(Kai Budde got the biggest face!

Enormous visages win the Pro Tour Player race!)

Rise up, Rizzo-clones; let your voice be heard!

So shave your head! Submit! And grow a chinny-beard!

Ciao,

Tony Boydell

P.S. – Could I please ask you to not publish this letter; it’s private and personal and I wouldn’t not want it to enter the public domain. Thanks in advance for respecting my wishes!
