Pick 3: You don’t want to pick Nath’s Elite or Neck Snap at this point, so it’s
between Smokebraider and Sentinels of Glen-Elendra, since everything else is
weak. Sentinels is also not even one of the strongest Blue commons. I picked
Smokebraider as I already had a Changeling Titan, so it could allow for a turn
three Titan (or a splashed Titan).
Pick 4: The first tough decision of this draft. Unlike the last pack, this one
is full with goodies. Smokebraider would commit us to Elementals, which has
two big advantages – the fact we already have one Smokebraider and Titan,
plus my experience tells me Red Elementals are being underdrafted now. However,
Drowner is a card that is so strong, I consider it first pick quality. Seeing it
fourth pick I feel I should go for it, as I already had an Oblivion Ring. If
this worked out, I was losing Pick 1 and Pick 3, Titan and Smokebraider.
For the next picks I saw only a Wellgabber Apothecary from the Merfolk tribe,
and I managed a switch into Red in time… Blue/Red, or so I thought.
After establishing myself in Red, I made some off-color picks, mostly
Changeling spells. I was counting on Smokebraider or Vivid Lands to play
them, and I managed to finally draft a five-color Smokebraider deck, as requested by
some readers on the foruns. I just wish I had one more Vivid, or one
Wanderer’s Twig for better fixing.
Round 1 I played against Blue/White Merfolk.
I had perfect mana both games. I was able to cast any spell in my
hand, but in game 1 he just had the god draw. There was nothing I could do about it. He
used all of his mana every single turn until he killed me, starting with a
turn 1 Drum, going through turn 4 Shriekmaw, turn 6 Benthicore, and
Mirror Entity the next turn.
Game 2 I managed to deal some damage early on, refill with a Mulldrifter
and champion it for a Changeling Titan. However, he found a way to stop
Titan without killing it, Tideshaper Mystic and Wellgabber Apothecary [umm…
how does that work? – Craig, amused]. He also had a Judge in play that also
meant he was going up in life again. My Lash Out
was not good enough to stop it, and when he drew a Benthicore he went up 20
life too quickly. I finally drew one of my cards that could kill Apothecary
(non-damage based), so I got rid of it and the Judge, passing to offense with
Changeling Titan. He had lots of life and many merfolk to chump, so it was
going to take a while. One turn he used Tideshaper Mystic on one of his
lands, and I immediately knew I was dead, even before the Mystic ability
resolved. He had something likev5 Islands, 5 Plains, and 1 Swamp… I’m pretty sure you
can figure it out too.
It’s sad that I had all the power I saw in my deck, had no mana problems,
and decent draws, and was still outpowered by Shriekmaw, Mirror Entity, and
Profane Command. Add Chandra and Garruk, and that’s my shortlist of cards I
pick over Mulldrifter.
